That's wonderful--I was thinking I'd click through and see a wood glider with a nice cushion. But that looks really modern and stylish. Those wooden gliders feel great but they're so ugly. With that picture, you could buy a used glider from Craigslist and either make the slipcover yourself if you're handy, or have someone make it for you professionally and probably still come out ahead of the game. Jacqueline, you're amazing! And if you wanted to make a few bucks, you'd probably have a long list of customers if you started selling them on Etsy.

Thanks for all your comments! I didn't use a pattern but i cut roughly shaped pieces of fabric first, then pinned and tailored as i went. i used a lot of extra padding (foam and batting) as well as some thin masonite board to square off the arm and back. I don't know if i'd have time to sell them on Etsy though --- not with the baby on his way :-). thanks again!

Oh- it took about 4.5 metres of fabric.

So jealous. I also got a free glider and it looks very much like the "Before" photo but I've resigned myself into just having an ugly-assed glider. I wish I had sewing skills . . .

Perfect timing! I just received a nearly identical glider from my step-mom and was wondering what I could do with it. I feel so inspired. Now, if I can only follow through...

This is just a guess, but it looks like long rectangles of masonite were used on top of the curved arms and to redesign the curved back into something with square corners.

okay, totally going crazy over this one! had to sign up to comment and everything :-)
So, I love what you've done with this glider so much that today I went to the salvation army and there without missing a beat, was the glider. Grandma looking and slightly dirty but the frame in perfect shape. I thought of this amazing transformation and thought... I can do that!
If you are interested, I would love to write a bit on you and perhaps get you to do a little "How to" for a publication.
If nothing else, I'd love to know my self. Thanks!

thanks again for all the comments. to answer some questions, yes, it still glides -- i put little pleats at the bottom corners by the feet so it allows for movement. if feels really comfy to sit in actually. more padding that was there before.

OMG!!! I was literally trolling the internet last night for a cushion replacement and was saddened by what i found. This is gorgeous!!! Anyone want to make one for me? Or know of a good seamstress/upholsterer in bklyn that could hook this up?
