Changing tables are a way of life when you have a little one still in diapers. But what if your floor plan just doesn't allow a bulky piece of furniture? IKEA has come to the rescue once again, and this collapsible changing table has a few tricks up it's sleeve. Details after the jump...
New! Collapsible Changing Table From IKEA
The new Spoling Changing Table packs a punch in what, at first glance, appears to be a drying rack for clothes. All parts are removable, machine washable and able to take some heavy duty use. But what really caught our attention is the bottom mesh "basket." You can zip it closed and toss all your dirty diapers right in the wash!
The side pockets hold enough supplies to tide you over for a day or two and help keep things like wipes, diapers, creams and powders right at hand.
The only thing we aren't 100% sold on is safety. It's high enough up in the air, standing tall at 37", that we're concerned about a squirmer tipping the unit over. It would be an easy thing to store in between children, or for a grandparent to have at their home. It would slide easily under a bed or hide flat against the wall in the back of a closet.

I was excited about this portable changing table until I saw it in the store. It was VERY wobbly and didn't seem like it would hold much weight at all. I love the idea, but we passed in the end because it didn't appear sturdy enough.

I have a baby in diapers and no changing table. We use a nice soft changing pad on top of the bed, couch, or floor, depending where we are, and it's easy enough to stash when we're finished. Her diaper supplies go in a little basket. If you have room, I'm sure it's nice to have a dedicated changing table, but they're not absolutely necessary.

We've got one of these and it has been a godsend.
We used it in our room for the first month or so before the nursery was ready - it meant everything we needed was at arms reach for those numerous night feeds
Now we're using it in baby's bedroom (10 weeks in), her cot is still in our room but the changing table has moved into her room. We've added a Wimmer Fergusen mobile - which she loves and we're hoping that changing her in this room will help prepare her for her eventual move.
The changing surface naturally forms a hammock which baby settles into and it surprisingly stable - her kicks make the mobile wiggle but it isn't going to topple!
We will pack it away once she can roll / pull herself up. It'll be much safer to change her on the floor by then. That would be true for any changing table though.
Now the changes are less frequent I'll happily switch to the basket of essentials and a changing mat on the floor.
We deliberately chose this one so we
a) didn't spend too much money and
b) could easily pack it away once it's short life was over

In the store it seemed unstable. On top of that, it was impossible to figure out how to fold it up! After 5 minutes, I gave up.

I saw it at the store and was almost convinced on buying it until i started noticing the wobbliness of it too. It says it's for under 12 months so maybe they think babies don't get squirmy for diaper changes until then, which is a joke! :) I agree, it would be a good grandparents house thing for a smaller infant.

When I saw this at the store, the weight limit on the table was 25 LBS.
