Nursery Tour: Guthrie's Retro Stripes

guthries room12.jpg

Name: Guthrie
Location: California

Jana created a real little boy's room for Guthrie with striped walls, vintage finds, and a warm green palette.

The initial inspiration for the room was the metal "Dream" sign above. Jana loves modern designer nursery furniture, but instead hunted around for furniture like Million Dollar Baby via Walmart with similar contemporary lines on a smaller budget.

The rugs and window treatments come from Ikea. Jana is currently on the lookout for the right FLOR tiles to replace them eventually. Jana shortened the Ikea panels and stenciled multi-colored G's (for Guthrie). With true DIY spirit, Jana told us she forgot to put plastic down underneath the panels, and now she has permanent G's on her living room carpet. The patchwork bedding is from Pottery Barn.

Jana loves the way the stripes turned out, but she warns us that it's not a project for those lacking patience. Her husband Tony is the one who carefully taped off everything. We have to say- these stripes look perfect.

Without being too themey, Jana created a boyish room with a lot of charm, without spending a bundle, all while having a "blast." Great job!

Looks beautiful! I love the "dream" sign. Reminds me of those expensive metal signs in the Sundance catalog.

The striping is amazing! I think I may steal that idea for my son's nursery! The curtains are brilliant too!

Super room! Love the stripe. Do you ever get nervous with stuff hanging on the wall over the crib?

If you love stripes but are so impatient like me, you can actually find stick on vinyl ones at wallcandyarts.com. Just a thought. Really cute room. Especially love the stars!

I do get nervous about hanging stuff, but I have a hardcore husband who hangs stuff like no other; we have them bolted pretty well. Thanks for the fun comments; it was a labor of love and quite fun; our lil girls room, which I can put on flickr, is so different and very romantic and girly---muted hues, with a lil pretty baby chandelier---it throws off a pretty shadow at nite---very juxtaposed to this bold boys ensemble. warmth, jana

Wowee! I figured it out. How to comment that is! Great job little Mama. G Man is so fortunate to have you and so are we. He will get reminded of his special room when he grows up and will always be grateful for the special interest Mommy and Daddy took to express who he is!

Beautiful! We have the same dream sign!! Never thought I would see it in someone else's nursery. Did you buy it on Melrose?

I love the way you can see the tire swing peeking through the curtains!

We got the Dream sign at a cute little shop in downtown Benicia (west coast, bay area)---that drove our whole idea; I do have to add that my parents, Guthrie's nana and papa joe found the vintage radio flyer, had it repainted and put his name on both sides---priceless :) you can see how he felt about it.

thanks for the comments :) jana

Love it and the G Man. Cool clowns! ;) The "DREAM" turned out great and the stars are perfect. My fav is the window treatment. Did you actually find the curtains that way or did you stencil the G's? I wouldn't doubt you did that yourself. Your talent and creativity is out of this world. Supportive & inspired, Christina
