Location: Hong Kong Name: JY's Room

We came upon the wonderful room Siow Chin had created for her daughter JY while perusing her blog LIttle Purl of the Orient. Here's what Siow Chin had to say about the design process:

We're located in Hong Kong where most people live in small flats. Hence we choose white as the main colour in the apartment and in most of the furniture. And accent with bolder-coloured accessories that we buy here and there.

Our elder daughter's room is tiny, about 45 sq ft. She's turned 7 this past October and we think it's time for her to have her own room. Because of the small space, we have to custom make the furniture to make full use of what's available.

I initially started crocheting the granny squares to make a queen size afghan for our double bed as inspired by this blog post showing the Petra Boase bedspread. When my husband saw the squares, he liked them a lot but not as an afghan. We were then in the midst of redecorating the flat, in particular getting our daughter's room in shape. And he thought of the headboard idea, well, he's behind most of the decoration of our flat actually. So we asked our daughter, JY, to choose the squares she likes out of the whole pile, put them in a pleasing arrangement and then have the assembled piece mounted on canvas by an upholstery shop. And voila, the granny square headboard.

Thanks, Siow Chin!
