Nursery Tour: Penelope's Room

(Hello again to Tara, trying out for a spot on the Ohdeedoh editorial team. Enjoy the nursery tour she put together for us - comments are welcome.)

We couldn’t think of a better way to introduce ourselves to the Ohdeedoh community than with a tour of Penelope’s room.

Maxwell’s felt door tutorial was used to help convert this former dining room into little Penelope’s brand new nursery. As renters, we were limited in what we were able to do to personalize the space but with a mix of items found via Etsy or handmade by ourselves and friends, we were able to turn a small dining room into a cozy space.

Living in earthquake prone San Francisco meant that the framed artwork formerly above the wall where the crib now sits needed to be moved. A small hat brought back from Peru by a dear friend and a string of banners handmade from leftover scraps of fabric are the only things that now adorn the wall.

Because the room lacks closet space we needed to get a bit creative with storage solutions. A vintage credenza is used to hold all of the cloth diapers, covers and accessories that should last Penelope through potty learning.

While renting definitely puts limits on what we can do in a room, it also gives us a lot of flexibility for future changes. As Penelope grows from newborn to toddler, the room can simply and easily grow and change with her.

The room looks great from the photos on the post. It's saying there is an error and it's unable to load the photos when I try and watch the slide show though.

Love the soft colors and gentle pink influence. Where is the crib from?

Any tips re. how you made the fabric penants? I'm about to try to make something very similar out of my daughters' baby clothes but I haven't sewed anything since 8th grade home ec class :)

the slideshow isn't loading for me either...looks like maybe an error on that page?

jellibelli....the crib is actually the parklane crib from walmart (part of the Baby Mod line)

metromom.....the fabric penants were really easy to make. i cut a triangle out of posterboard and used that as a template to cut out equal sized pieces from the scrap fabrics i was using. i bought some jumbo sized ric rac from a fabric store and simply sewed the cut out flags to the ric rac. the whole project took less than an hour. some of the fabric used was leftover from the ottoman i made for the glider (made from Amy Butler's gum drop pillow pattern...also not too difficult)

Really, really lovely, Tara. I love the little touches, like the knitted hat above the crib.

OK, folks, for a few days now I haven't been able to view slideshows on your sites. Yes, I'm using Firefox, but I've used it with slideshows before. Now all I get is errors, weird-looking pages...

What a refreshing and relaxing room! Such a creative use of space and materials. I especially love that you weren't afraid to mix up the color pallet by integrating the hat and banner. Well done!

Hi all-
I made a slight change to the photo titles in the slideshow, the previous ones may have been what was causing the trouble for some of you. Hope it is working for everyone now -thanks!

I love the "feeling" of this room. Often, simplicity means cold but this young mother has successfully accomplished giving this space a warm and serene look.

What a lovely room.

From what I can tell, those are decals on the wall above the changing table. Can you tell me where you found them? Many thanks.

I am getting kind of sick of not being able to see the slide shows. I also hate the new album format. Ok......

I love this room. It is cute and sweet, but not overly so. I really like the furniture and especially the vintage credenza.

egriffny...unfortunately i don't remember the name of the fabric. i found it at britex fabrics here in san francisco (http://www.britexfabrics.com/index.html) but would be happy to pop in the next time i'm in the union square area to get an answer for you.

georgiajj....the decals are by wee gallery. penelope is completely mesmerized by them and she loves to "chat" away at them while getting a diaper changed. you can find them and many other styles here: http://www.weegallery.com/products.html

chococat...the crib is the parklane crib from the baby mod line at walmart.

it's the second time I saw our crib and changing table on this site :-D

A truly beautiful room. It is simple, understated, and very stylish...

I LOVE the wall accents, the two tone credenza, and most of all that cute owl lamp! great job

I'm glad that I'm not the only one having trouble with the slideshows. Ever since AT started using the new album format (which I'm not a fan of either), I have not been able to view slideshows in either firefox or safari. I liked the old album format much better. Oh well!

Beautiful room though! It is sweet, simple and feminine without being overly girly!

alisnave....the shade was just a basic Thomas O'Brian one from target that i covered with the leftover fabric i had from the ottoman. i used spray glue to apply the fabric to the shade. so simple.

the mahoney....they are in fact goodmamas!! they're in there with a mix of muttaqin baby and sweetiebums as well.

Hi there.
I want to make flags for my son's bedroom and just wanted to ask if you bothered to hem each triangle?
Beautiful Room!
Cheers

milk tea, thanks for the tips -- if you're still reading, I'm curious whether you just left the edges unfinished - I was thinking I'd cut two triangles for each flag and stitch them together - but simpler would be even better!

Aw, what a lovely, serene nursery! If only I had the restraint to make mine so soothing. We did flags too, only out of leftover paper. I love the fabric one. And I love the placement of the wall graphics.

Great job!

Jenna Lea & metromom,
I made banners for my daughter using this website as a template: http://stitchriprepeat.blogspot.com/2007/06/festive-bunting-tutorial.html
It turned out great! I didn't hem edges either, I just used the pinking rotary blade.

Jenna Lea & metromom,

I didn't hem the edges at all. I used a rotary blade to cut each triangle which left a really clean line. The pinking rotary idea that herz9160 posted sounds like a fabulous idea!

Hello There

Gorgeous room. I especially love the rocking chair and the little doll. It is so adorable.

Do you mind telling me where the doll is from?

Thanks so much

Nicole.

so so comfortable.

cocogirl...the doll is from from Emily Martin's etsy shop, "the black apple". http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=991

her paintings and dolls tend to sell out quickly when she stocks her shop but you can find out when she plans to update the shop with more goodies by reading her blog here: http://theblackapple.typepad.com/

Milktea--I'm thinking of getting that crib or a similar one that's even lower (no drawer) from AP Industries called the Lollipop crib. How has it worked for you, having the crib so low to the floor? My husband and I are quite tall, I'm wondering if it will kill our backs!

Love the nursery! Can't wait to get working on mine. And Penelope is a great name.

Pencils...thanks so much for the compliments!

We absolutely love the crib and prefer that it is lower because we didn't want one that had a drop side. I'm not very tall and the mattress is at it's highest setting but so far we've been really happy with it.

Thanks Milk Tea--we don't want a drop side crib either, they're so much more sturdy without them. it's currently between that one, the Lollipop, or the twice as expensive, but much higher Loom crib. Cannot make up my mind! But it's OK, our baby is going in a cradle first so there's no huge rush.

Milk tea- thanks so much! I've been coveting the Jonathan Adler giraffe lamp but at almost $400 it's too pricey for me and far too risky to put in my son's room so this owl lamp will fit the bill nicely!
