apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

My Room: Liam
North Carolina

Leanne did a fabulous job on Liam's nursery. We're so glad she sent us photos and the design details. She writes: "I had this room in my head as soon as I saw the fabric I chose for the curtains (Ikea). They look like modern trees to me, balloons on strings to others, but either way I love the bold statement they make. I knew I was having a boy...

...and wanted to go more on the modern side with a little bit of traditional mixed in.

I fell in love with the Oeuf crib and dresser, but way over my budget, so I shopped around and thought this Wal-Mart collection (Olivia by Baby Mod) was pretty darn close. I actually like the warmth of the round wooden legs and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. The paint is by Benjamin Moore and the the color is called Beach Glass. I thought it was the perfect soothing blue with the tiniest hint of green. The bookcase is also a Wal-Mart find, I got the idea from a comment on this website (thanks)! The glider rocker was a very generous gift from my in-laws; it is the Monte Luca Glider with ottoman.

The cloud pictures above the changing table I took myself, and played with them in Photoshop to make them look like paintings. Then I had them printed on canvas and stretched, very inexpensive & easy at Quality Canvas Photos online. I have heard it can be dangerous to hang pictures above the crib so I let the mobile (by Bla Bla) do the work there. The top picture above the bookcase was just a piece of scrapbook paper that I glued a small red bird on, stuck it in a frame and wha-la instant art.

All in all I wanted it to be a soothing room for my little boy, still be vibrant with color and budget friendly.

Thanks, Leanne!

Could you elaborate on what you used for the bookcase?

Bravo!

And kudos for being the first nursery tour in ages to *not* feature bumpers!! (I have to bit my tongue about them each time -- it's been getting very painful).

Thanks for the nice comments.

The laundry basket is from Walmart, here is the link...

I made the curtains & the fabric is from Ikea, not sure if they sell it anymore. They do have great bold fabric though that is very inexpensive.

What a fantastic nursery! I love the cloud pictures (and the recommendation for the website to have them put on canvas) and the mobile is one I coveted when I was pregnant.

Beautiful fabric, once again I wish I could sew! I really like the peaceful feeling of this room.

mschatelaine - I think a lot of parents put the bumpers in for pictures only (at least I did). I'm sure they take them out when the baby actually sleeps in the crib.

Really charming. Love the curtains and rods. Love the bookcase. Love the cheerful sheet. Love the bumperless crib. Love it all really.

What did you think of the quality of the bookcase? The reviews on the walmart site are mixed at best.

Hmmm my comment was deleted. However I will reiterate, it's a very peaceful nursery and I love the fabric. I'm really curious what the little chair off to the side looks like.

I don't get the baby bumper comment. Aren't cribs supposed to have them for newborns so our babies don't bonk their heads as they roll around when they sleep?

I would love to do without one because I can't find one I like, but thought they were pretty necessary.

JudiAU - I also looked at the reviews and was a bit worried when I ordered it, but figured I could return it if it was bad. One of the lips on the cross bars (that holds the books in) was separated a little, as people mentioned in their reviews. I was able to just take a soft mallet and hammer it back together and it was fine. It is sturdy if you anchor it to the wall, like they recommend. I have to say when I got it, the box was in terrible shape and I thought there was no way it would be okay, but besides that one little thing it was fine and easy to put together.

Megan in AZ - I am sorry I did not get the little giraffe chair in the picture better. It was a gift I got at my shower.

I could not decide what to do here, especially because I like to sew and wanted to make some in the worst way. I kept reading how they were recommending not to use them so once I got the room together I was actually happy with how it looked and thought nothing else was needed there. I have to say that my son is starting to stick his hands out so I looked around a little and found these mesh bumpers...

I am thinking of getting them.

Leanne, I have looked at those breathable baby bumpers too, but haven't tried anything yet (baby not here yet). FYI, they make a full-sided one in case baby tries to climb on the shorter one when he is a little oldler: http://www.amazon.com/BreathableBaby-CribShield-Crib-Liner-White/dp/B0013FKUW4/ref=pd_bbs_8?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1236789236&sr=8-8

They still have it and it is still on sale, by far the best price I found, I'm a bargain hunter! It is a little on the pricey side, but I just loved it and splurged on it. It is wonderful quality.

yourmom -- bumpers are thought to be a risk factor for SIDS, and are not necessary with modern cribs. Here's some info:

This room is among the best I have seen! Great taste! I love the changing table and dresser. Can you tell me where you got them and if you had to assemble them yourself?

lorrindagail - Thanks for your nice comment. The dresser and changing table are from Wal-Mart. It is the Olivia collection by BabyMod.

Changing table:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8592560

Dresser:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8807790

They do have to be assembled, my husband put them together and said they were pretty easy to assemble, he did say to put them together in the room you want to use them because he made the mistake of assembling them downstairs then having to carry them up and he said they are pretty heavy. They are very nice quality, all wood. I was very pleasantly surprised at how nice they are especially for the price. If you read the reviews online everyone really likes them. The changing table is the perfect height and has lots of storage inside. I don't think you would be disappointed. Good luck.

Hi Suzy Z - Thanks so much for your kind comment.

Unfortunately I found the basket at TJMAXX a few years ago, so I have had it for a long time. They do still have stuff like this from time to time. Also, if you have a Homegoods close to you they have a lot of great baby decor.

Your curtains are stunning! Actually, the whole nursery is gorgeous but I really love the curtains.
I am a fairly novice sewer and the only patterns I can find are for tab curtains. Did you use a pattern for this one? Or did you find at least some loose directions online?

Congrats on a beatiful nursery.

Hi Jenn D,

The curtains I made are are lined panels with grommets on top, but you could easily leave the grommets out and just make a rod pocket. I did not have any specific directions, but I looked around online and this link is the closest to what I do,

http://www.ehow.com/how_4760447_sew-lined-rod-pocket-curtains.html

I lined them with blackout curtain lining so I could close them and make the room extra dark for daytime naps. You do not have to line them though and that would be even easier. This link is what I could find for unlined panels.

http://sewing.about.com/od/homedecprojects/ss/basiccurtain.htm

I hope this helps. It is amazing what you can find online! Have fun and thanks so much for your nice comments.
