Jennifer sent us in photos of Lila Sage's warm and playful nursery. She tells us: We moved two weeks before Lila Sage was scheduled to come into the world. The unpacking and concentrated nesting proved too much for her and she came a week early--so sadly her nursery wasn't complete until she was almost 2 months old! I was on a serious budget but splurged on the Baroque mirror from Brocade because it felt perfectly pristine and feminine. From there I felt drawn to pinks and browns inspired...
...by the Dwell Studio Garden collection crib set. (I scored mine on ebay!) I complemented it with some Dwell accessories at Target. Because we are renting I couldn't paint but wanted something interesting on the walls so I scoured Blik for the perfect Woodland theme wall stickers. I added the zebra rug from Target, and the crib and changing table are from the BabyMod line at Wal-Mart. The prints are from velocityartanddesign.com. I love Amy Ruppel's owls. We went with the owl theme with our Flensted mobile. The Moses basket is from RHBaby and the daybed from CB2.
Thanks, Jennifer!

Love, love, love all the artwork above the crib!
(Though I do need to mention that our pediatrician advised us not to hang art above the crib in case of earthquakes.)

You are very right about that, MamaC. Lila doesn't sleep in her crib, she sleeps in our bedroom 2 floors up (In Twin Peaks most of the homes are very tall!) So it's form over function for awhile anyway. Thanks for your concern. :)

LOVE the room! Very cool.
I got a similar George Nelson (reproduction, but "George Nelson" brand?) clock from eBay recently:

I love this room - you did a beautiful job!
I see a neat looking light/lamp on the bookshelf. What is that and where did you get it?

Love the room! Love the George Nelson clock--it's great how good design can fit into a child's room. The Eames Hang-it-all is another great item for kids' rooms. And I adore the mirror with the elaborate frame, again, not necessarily something you'd see in a child's room, but it goes really well. I am, however, a little freaked out by the photo of the baby lying on the changing mat with no one next to her--my baby used to be angelic and patient during diaper changes, but she recently turned into a wiggle monster bent on escape at any cost. You never know when a baby is going to try to turn over for the first time (or turn into a wiggle monster), so always, always keep a hand on your baby on the changing table!
(I'm sorry, I hate to be one of those people who post admonishing parenting comments on a design blog, but that photo is really bothering me and I feel I have to say something.)

Love that crib in dark walnut! Especially with the pink bedding. Such a sweet room.
Pencils - I'm sure no babies were harmed in the photographing of this nursery.
There should be a rule on Ohdeedoh that no one remark on any sort of (what they view as) parenting "mistakes". (Pictures hung over the crib, bumpers, etc...) It has nothing to do with decor and it drives me crazy. Seriously.

Megan--I know what you're saying, but as a parent, that photo made me want to dash across that room and grab the baby before she rolled off. I'm sure the child wasn't actually hurt--what parent would post the photos if she were--but maybe Ohdeedoh should have a policy of not posting photos of dangerous situations, rather than a policy of policing well-meaning comments.

Pencils, I understand your sentiments whole heartedly...then again I totally will tell a stranger to put socks on their baby:)

Beautiful room, Jennifer! We've been eyeing this BabyMod crib too, but were wondering if you had any issues with it being too short? It seems as though it's only 3 feet tall and we're both under 5'9".
Have you had any back problems when lifting up your baby from this crib?
Thanks in advance!
view leslieville's profile
Jennifer-this drives me crazy. I read all the posts and I agree with the people who commented on your placement of photos above the crib...then you said your baby doesn't even SLEEP in the crib! Then what's the point?? Just for photo's sake? She obviously lies on the changing table though-that ornate mirror is an accident waiting to happen, just as soon as she gets big enough to pull it down! It's not a parenting "mistake." New parents make all kinds of decisions then later regret them, but that's how we learn-your design decisions are just unrealistic and not practical. Re-hang the artwork and mirror elsewhere and let your baby sleep in her crib!!
view amy-in-sf's profile
Wow. How insulting, Pencils. (And I've been worried about what people would think about her taking formula now and again!) :)
m123: the lamp on the bookshelf is from Ikea circa about a year ago. It's got bendy, snakey arms that you can shape in all different ways. It's neat and gives off a warm glow.
And Leslieville, the crib doesn't feel too short or pain-inducing. I do know what you mean, because I definitely feel my back when lifting her out of her PaknPlay. Yet, she doesn't currently sleep in her crib, she sleeps in our bedroom, so I probably don't have the repetitive experience to fully advise. I can say it doesn't look inordinately short or tall, and it's probably on the compact side of some of the cribs we looked at. Happily, it's holding up pretty well!
Thanks for the kind comments!

Ok. Amy, Pencils, this is an inappropriate forum for you to bash me as a parent. My child is not old enough or active enough to pull down the mirror, and the minute she is we will make arrangements for that. In the photo I am within arms length of her on the changing table. And she is clearly not wiggling, and she does not roll. As a breastfeeding, co-sleeping parent I am in tune with her every move and at first flinch I will have my hands on her. Come on people. Look at the pictures for what they are. Design ideas. I really don't think you have a child protective services case here.
view Jensing32's profile
Totally agree with Jennifer. I love the design IDEAS in your room. We don't have anything hanging above our crib except for a origami mobile I made and then nailed to the vaulted ceiling. Our daughter wouldn't be able to reach it even if she learned to somehow jump real high. BUT I still got flack for that, even though it's made of paper and string, weighs as much as a feather AND is hung with one of those grapple nails. It will only come down if a chunk of the ceiling goes with it! Just go with your gut and know what works for you and change when necessary. Looks like you put a lot of thought and creativity in your current design. And so awesome to see pink without the 'princess'. Great work!

I am sorry and by no means were my comments intended to "bash" you. I only meant that if your photos were to provide "design ideas" as you say, then placement of art in glass frames and mirrors should give the viewer proper "ideas" on where to put them in a baby's nursery. It's just not practical, and also being from shaky grounds here in SF I know the reality of an impending quake. Design Ideas for children's rooms should be practical and functional in my opinion.
(and btw, I think "Pencil's" worrisome comments are over the top with regard to your daughter's safety on the changing table-enough said.)

Fair enough, Amy. :)

Someone tell me Pencils is joking!! Really?? "I feel I have to say something." Is it not obvious that she is a foot away and does it look like her daughter is going to move? I think SHE would know HER daughter's rolling capabilities better than you.
And a lot of people begin with a crib and then transition to co-sleeping, especially when the baby is only two months old.
This is a beautiful room. The color combinations are just lovely. And I especially love the subtle hints of green in the clock and wall decals.

Holy cow, leave the poor mom alone! She's done a gorgeous job with little Lila Sage's room and if she starts grabbing at the mirror I'm sure her mom will move it. Comments like this really bother me and are plentiful on AT - we're all just trying to do our best as parents and people so a little more support, please!

I am so sorry for all those awful comments; it's not the point of sharing your space. Your room is really beautiful and calming; you did a lovely job. I think a great nursery can grow with your child; like changing where a picture hangs :)
I hope you aren't too upset by the feedback; bear in-mind unsolicited advice goes hand in hand with being a parent.
Congratulations on Lila Sage,

I don't actually like being rude, but if it means that a child avoids getting hurt, I'm happy to be. One of the very first things you should have learned as a new parent is never leave a baby alone on an elevated surface like a bed, couch, or changing table. It's why changing tables and changing mats are covered with warning stickers. Babies are hurt all the time when they suddenly roll off when left unattended--and "unattended" means not right next to the baby. Don't believe me? Ask your pediatrician, look in a parenting book, check the internet. Cosleeping with your baby doesn't make you telepathic; there is always a first time for everything, especially with babies, who have "firsts" all the time. If your child has yet to surprise you, just wait, it will happen soon.
It's true that this isn't the place for such a discussion, but I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the photo of the unattended baby. We all know about how pictures can be dangerous when hung over a crib or changing table unless they are bolted to the wall, and the safety of bumpers has been debated endlessly. But there is no way that a baby left alone on a changing table is anything but dangerous. I spoke up because I was shocked that anyone would do such a thing, in case there was anyone else reading who didn't realize how dangerous it could be. Call me whatever names you want--just keep a hand on your baby when he or she is on the changing table.
view Pencils's profile
This is very nice. Is the wall with the crib a light yellow? Can you share the name of the color? Thanks!
view be2124's profile
be2124: The wall color is actually just the creamy white rental home color. It was like that when we moved in.
Pencils: no one would argue the dangers of leaving a child unattended on a changing table. My child is simply NOT unattended. My husband is taking the photos and I am right there, cropped out of course! The criteria for "attended" or "unattended" can obviously be disputed. For me, it's your presumption that is insulting. But if you truly think you are saving a child, then I suppose your speaking up is warranted. I believe your point is taken. Thank you.

You did an excellent job with this room Jennifer, I think the rug is my favorite part of the room. :)
I also admire you for posting photos of your babies room. I would love to do so with my daughters' room. BUT, I am not quite as thick skinned as I need to be. ;)

Pencils, if you are going to raise your child based on the Internet or a book - I fear for your child more than I do Jensing32 standing an arms length away on a changing table when her baby is two months old.

I think it is a beautiful, warm and peaceful room. The decorations are fabulous and things are placed well around the room. As for all these comments about safety (lol), A baby's room is really for the mom. It should be beautiful and soothing so that mom, who is going to really be the one using everything in the room, feels good about being in there. For we all know that as a new mom, things are hectic enough! I love my daughter's room, some times I just go sit in there because it's soothing. I love how it looks. And I too had pictures over her crib when she was a baby. The good thing about pictures and other objects is that they can BE MOVED when they are attractive to a child. Now that she is two going on three, I have moved the pictures, changed out the crib for a toddler bed and basiclly put all harmful things out of her reach. I do sometimes miss how it used to look when she could reach for anything, but just as adult move furniture around, you do it for kids too.

I love the idea of a daybed in a nursery! Do you mind sharing where you bought it. Thank you so much!
view wednesdayaddams's profile
Mommyof2: How true! Certainly for me anyway. Well said. Thanks for posting. :)
Wednesdayaddams: The daybed is from CB2 and it's great because it folds out to queen size. The nursery doubles as a guest room (and we've had lots of guests!) so this was a nice solution. Two drawbacks are that it's not super comfortable. We put a featherbed on top for guests. Also, it's a weave fabric and our dog's hair is very difficult to get off. Otherwise, I think it looks great and was relatively affordable.

Totally beautiful (like your baby girl.) LOVE that mirror - can totally understand you splurging on it! What is the bunch of little lights above the leaning bookcase in the corner? I can't tell if it's a lamp or a DIY thing... Seems like it probably gives a nice, soft light in there.

I love how bright and full of light this room is! I'm trying dark wood in my nursery that I'm planning right now, and I'm pretty sure my husband thinks it will make the entire space dark- thanks for giving me something to show him to convince him otherwise. Lila is beautiful, and I love the name (and her outfit!). Great job!
