My Room: Little P

Megan sent us some photos and info on the beautiful room she put together: This is the nursery we created for our first baby on the way...a little girl we are now calling "Little P." My main goal was to design a space that is cheerful, happy, inviting, warm, and modern. I didn't want to use a cutesy theme, so I chose a color theme instead...

To keep the room from looking too sterile and harsh, I layered in warm colors, textures, and fabrics. We introduced natural seagrass wallpaper on the front of the Ikea dresser to give it a more warm, upscale/unique look which paved the way for the wicker storage baskets and wicker elephant hamper.

I used fabric from Purl Soho in embroidery hoops on the wall in attempts to add a coziness and warmth as well. A favorite element is the "hooray" banner I bought off Etsy. It's unique, warm, and cheerful and a word I use a lot. I think this room would make a great Ohdeedoh tour because it shows a use of colors and textures to create a look rather than relying on one set theme.

I believe not everything has to "match" or be made specifically for baby in order to work in a nursery. I think this space exemplifies that. I will be adding this space today to my blog and I write about creative endeavors here.

Thanks, Megan!

I love that this space uses IKEA and the color yellow but pulls it off with taste!

I'm really falling for yellow these days. Lovely room!

Wonderful room. Great color.

I'm also jealous that you got it done before the baby arrived, lol. I'm STILL working on stuff and my son is two months old.

Thanks everyone!! The color is from Benjamin Moore and the shade is #618, Robin's Nest. The bedding is from Nursery Works: it's called "Macaroni" in the color canary. I think they are phasing it out... you can get it for 75% off at www.fawn&forest.com, as of now when I just checked.

Beautiful! Really cheerful and inviting--great colors, love the chair and bedding, and everything really, but especially the dachshund! So refreshing to have a girl's room that doesn't bash you over the head with girliness, too. Love it.

Love this room. I am debating between that Ikea piece a dresser or just getting the PBK Cameron unit that is a wee bit clunky, but will hold more stuff (we don't have a closet in the baby room). But I like the way the Ikea shelving works with the crib!

In any case, it's beautifully done. Congrats on the new baby.

Thanks everyone!!!
Yes, the bedding is on sale at www.fawnandforest.com (it's by Nursery Works). The dresser is an Ikea dresser and I covered some of the drawer fronts with seagrass wallpaper to make it a little different and warm it up a little. The cube unit is also Ikea. The elephant basket was from www.homedecorators.com (you can look up elephant hamper and find it)...it's made of rattan. The wall color:
The color is from Benjamin Moore and the shade is #618, Robin's Nest. The chair in there is a swivel rocker that I found at Salvation Army for $9. We had custom slip-covers made to match the room since the chair was a puke green and had a small stain on the side. The Ollie Owl stuffed toy was hand made by a seller for www.modernnursery.com...I love it, KLT! Thanks! It will be her first stuffed animal.

posted by BabyDotsMom on February 12th 2009 at 2:40pm
view BabyDotsMom's profile

Hi BabyDotsMom's,
I got the crib online at www.modernnursery.com as a gift from my in-laws, it's by Oeuf and it's the "classic" crib with the birch finish. It's sustainable birch with non-toxic finishes. The rail doesn't adjust, but the base/mattress platform does for when the baby grows bigger. It also converts to a toddler bed with a kit sold separately.

It is gorgeous! Thank you for sharing. I love what you did with the Malm dressers. Is the seagrass wrapped onto the drawers, or just cut to fit the face of the drawers and affixed on there?

posted by war_eagle on February 13th 2009 at 8:06pm
view war_eagle's profile

War_eagle: Thanks!!! I traced the drawer fronts onto the seagrass wallpaper and trimmed them out. I glued them on the faces of the drawers using Mod Podge glue. To prevent bubbles underneath I smoothed the paper with my hands/pressed it from the center and worked my way out a zillion times to make sure it was nice and flat/flush with no bubbles. If there was any overhanging paper, I flipped the drawer face over onto a big piece of cardboard and used a very sharp Xacto knife to just trim off the excess from the edges. My lovely husband then assembled the dresser. :)

What a cheerful room for a baby girl! I absolutely love it, and the space seems so fresh and cozy...not overly girly like typical nurseries we see in magazines!!! Did you buy the lampshades or did you embellish them yourself? Everything is pulled together so nicely - great job!

Hi Megan,
I've read all the comments, but can't find anything about the artwork above the crib. The one on the left looks like something I have by Tara Hogan . . . Thanks for sharing your beautiful inspiration.

Hi Ashlie,

The artwork to the left is my own illustration. I do custom artwork and letterpressed cards at my shop: http://megancreates.etsy.com

The artwork to the right is from a book cover. The book is called "Play Pen: New Children's Book Illustration" by Martin Salisbury.

Love this room! I think the fabric circles are great, and I love the abundant use of yellow. The Hooray! banner is so perfect. We always say "hooray!" to Marli, especially now that she's standing. I'll pass this webpage on to her mom, as she is in the process of deciding some of the finishing wall design which includes dots and round mirrors.

I like that you added the seagrass wallpaper to the dresser. That is very clever. Down the road when your daughter is "decorating" everything with her crayons (like mine)you can just rip it off and re-paper!

The slipcover was ordered through Calico Corners (but they outsource to a guy in my area...he does reupholstery and slipcovers as his business). I bet you'd save money if you went directly to someone and cut out the middle man. :)
