Nursery Tour: Baby Daley's Room-to-Be

090109room-view.jpg

Names: Jaime & Liam, room prepared for Baby Daley, due late September 2009
Location: Brooklyn, NY

Jaime and Liam are still expecting, but their baby boy's nursery awaits with a mix of old and new (Liam's grandfather's display cabinet alongside a modern crib), and a love of warm vintage colors and gender-neutral decor...

Jaime says that they've been following Ohdeedoh for ideas and inspiration over the last few months, and they really tied together what they already had and loved with what they still needed and/or wanted. As far as what friends say, the ruling opinion so far has come from another couple's child, with a love of Sasquatch. Read on:

Ohdeedoh Survey:

Inspiration: This room is a true combination of everything we’ve seen on Ohdeedoh over the past few months, combined with my mid-century taste and my husband’s love of 70s colors like orange and brown. We also knew that wanted to have Liam’s grandfather’s display cabinet in the corner of the room.

Favorite Element: I was so happy to have found the Litto Kids line of bedding, which really pulled the room together. It was the first design we found that looked modern but not like a Dwell copy. The off-white/linen background reminds me of an Eames textile print.

Biggest Challenge: Although we knew pretty early on that we were having a boy, we tried to stay away from the typical light blues and greens associated with boys’ rooms.

What Friends Say: Our friend brought his son to our house, and my husband says he was fascinated by the Sasquatch poster we bought from the guys at Invisible Creature in Seattle.

Proudest DIY: We finally figured out how to install the Nelson bubble lamp in the room, after a year of using Ikea floor lamps, which never really did the trick. The room doesn’t have a box and isn’t wired for a ceiling light, so we turned the shade into a pendant and ran the wire down the wall. Not the most elegant solution but much better than the old swag lamps we’d been looking at.

Biggest Indulgence: The Monte Luca chair, of course. But isn’t it amazing?

Best advice: A baby’s room doesn’t have to have ducks and bunnies if you don’t want it to.

Dream source: Etsy and EBay for ideas.

i absolutely adore the furniture! i am in the market for nursery furnishings too - now i am caught in a dilemma as only walmart sells this line, and i have a longstanding "no walmart" policy.

We have the same furniture! It holds up wonderfully. (our little boy was born in late sept '08). I love the colors and accessories. It's very warm and inviting.

Jamie & Liam: You guys did a great job. We bought a little cheaper furniture, but splurged on the monte luca.

We're due right about the same time (we're early october) and we aren't near done with the nursery. Good job on being so prepared.

Supergaijin,
I too have an ambivalence about Walmart and really limit my purchases there as a result. If you want the furniture, I recommend making the purchase but also e-mailing corporate with your concerns and making it clear that you don't shop Walmart regularly because of their corporate practices. I don't think it's enough to boycott in silence. I think that it's important to make the company understand that if they want to appeal to a wider (and frankly, more monied) consumer base, they need to work on corporate responsibility as well as better design.

Oh and as for Daley's room. I love how the palette was pushed beyond blue and green. Not sure why there is such an impulse to get uncreatively monochromatic in babies' rooms but it is refreshing to see that changing. I also LOVE the inclusion of an antique. Children should live with history, I think, and well made things that evoke a different time and place. Very stimulating to the imagination and eye.

Very well put together. As for the poster you will need to hang it over another wall. When the baby is standing in the crib he/she may pull it off the wall

Hello.

Can anyone please tell me what that white trash can looking like thing is? It is in the photo next to the closet door and has 3 sections. Most importantly where can I find it?

Thanks in advance!

Beautiful room!! Where are the curtains from? I love the color. I also have the Park Lane furniture from WM (changer and tall dresser) and love them!

Also, for anyone looking for a really affordable alternative to little wall bookshelves like these, I bought a bunch of wood Bekvam spice racks from Ikea for $3.99 (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40070185), painted them, and voila--super cute/ cheap wall-mounted book racks. I have several of them by both of my boys' beds.

Thanks, everyone, for the comments and suggestions. Baby Daley was born nearly 4 weeks early so we're very glad to have had the room ready for him!

To answer some questions:

The curtains are from Pottery Barn. The little white dog was from Muji a few years ago, don't know if they still sell it. And the storage unit is Kartell Componibili - here's a link: http://hivemodern.com/products/?view=sub_product&sid=397&cid=183&cid2=186

very nicely done, the room looks great. i really like the colors and the mix of old and new.

regarding the crib - another similar option is the Westport crib by Amy Coe. we bought it online sight unseen and i love it. it also came with the toddler conversion kit which is nice to have on hand if we ever want to use it.

Congratulations, Jaime!

I love this room!!! I actually want to get this walmart furniture and it looks great in your nursery!
I was wondering what grey color this was? I am also doing grey as baby and parets will be sharing rooms at first.
Thanks in advance and congratulations on the new addition to the family!

Thanks!!

Sorry for the delay on the paint color - the can is in the cellar so I'm going on memory. It's definitely Benjamin Moore and perhaps Gray Timber Wolf but I can't be sure. Wish I could be more specific. One thing I did learn is that grays look even darker if your lighting isn't great; we almost wish we did the main room in this color and the nursery/bedrooms in the lighter shade... As for the owl, I bought it at a Renegade Craft Fair a few years back. The girls who made it have since documented the DIY craft movement in a movie and book called Handmade Nation. Here's a link to an interview by Grace at Design Sponge http://www.designspongeonline.com/2009/02/handmade-nation-special-edition-interview.html . Don't know if they make the owls anymore, unfortunately...

Take care.

Correction to the above post. Found the color - the gray is called Silver Fox (it's in the brown family) and the lighter shade we used in the rest of the house is called Abalone. Hope this helps.

This is such a beautiful nursery! One thing that caught my eye were the series of four shelves attached to the wall. Those are incredible! Would you mind sharing where they are from?
