Nursery Tour: Benji's Brooklyn Bunk

2007_06_14_benji.jpg

Location: Brooklyn, NY
Childs Name, Age: Benjamin (aka Ben, Benji), 9 months
Room Size: 8 x 12

Yellow is sunshine and so are children so Benji's yellow room makes perfect sense.

We first caught a glimpse of Benjis room via Design Sponge's profile of his parents, Anna and Tim Harrington. Anna and Tim are the creative force behind Deadly Squire, a Brooklyn-based, home accessories line outfitted in patterns of their own design.

Like many parents, Anna and Tim kissed goodbye to their extra room, in this case Annas painting studio, and transformed it into a nursery. Yellow can be a tricky color to paint with, but theyve pulled it off here with a lively, sunny shade that is welcoming and opens up the room.

2007_06_14_benji2.jpgAnna reports that leaving floor space for Benji to play on was a priority so they appropriated the window sill as a shelf for Benjis favorite books and also built a shelf above the door for out of sight storage.

A shelf above the changing table holds diaper accoutrements which provides easy access without contributing clutter. (Clearly Anna and Tim have some height!). Tim lovingly draws pictures and tapes them on the shelfs underside for Benji to contemplate while being changed.

A few notes on the room's details from Anna:

The "foot stool" is actually 2 velveteen covered foam cushions so
they can double as climbing "blocks" for Benji.

We decided to keep the guitar in his room even now that he is
crawling b/c he loves it so much and we are trying to teach him to be
careful and that he is not allowed to pull everything down... it's
actually working!!

The Numark record player is great - it doesn't need speakers, is
portable and plays records with the nicest "old school" sound. We
love to play Ben our favorite records (not just baby music!).

Notes on a few details:

  • The sheep mobile is by Flensted.
  • Bedding by Dwellbaby in robin motif.
  • Soft log by Amanda Barr.

Thanks Benji, Anna and Tim for sharing with us!

Oh goodness! To me this is just perfect. It's everything a nursery should be. Soft and warm and welcoming. I love that you keep a record player in your baby's room. I also love the "black sheep" mobile.
