Nursery Tour: Katie's Room

Names: Jessica and Katie (21-months-old)
Location: Rigby, Idaho

Being a fan of the Web site *Kerflop, we were delighted when Jessica, who writes *Kerflop, agreed to do a nursery tour. Just recently, Jessica completed this renovation of Katies room from a crib nursery to a big-girl room. This bright and breezy room instantly puts a smile on your face; several DIY touches add to the comfortable feeling the room emits.

When asked about her design style Jessica answered, "My design style is just starting to emerge. I didn't know exactly what I wanted, or even liked. I just knew I didn't like what I'd already done. I started reading your Web site and found myself bookmarking products you'd featured, requesting catalogs from stores you'd mentioned and really felt like I was starting to make a bit of sense out of my design style."

Looking at the room, its evident Jessica has found her style which is clean, fresh and bright and mostly about creating the main components herself. The centerpiece of the room is a quilt handmade by Jessica which was the basis for the room's color scheme. About it Jessica says, "It started with the quilt fabrics. My mother, sister and I went to one of the only fabric stores in our area that sells more modern prints and picked out the fabrics. I was really nervous about how it would all come together. Stacked up, the fabrics really didn't match at all! But once I had it finished, I finally had more of a vision and was able to pick out the paint colors." The paint Jessica picked out for the room was Behrs Country Mist -- understated, yet cheerful.

The decorative touches in the room are great as well. Katie's name is spelled on the wall with wooden letters from 3D Woodcraft which Jessica modge-podged with scrapbooking paper. A shadow box on the wall, above the rocking chair, contains Jessica's baby blanket (made by her great grandmother) and Katie's blessing day dress hangs on a hanger next to the window.

Other items in the room include bedding from Target and curtains, a bookcase, bed, doll bed and lamp from Ikea. The refinished dresser (painted with Behrs Marina Isle paint) was found at Goodwill and was finished with handles and knobs from Target. The classic rocking chair is a Craigslist find Jessica refinished and the silver mobile is from West Elm.

The PB Teen mirror, bird pillow and Ubiki prints were items featured here of which Jessica adds, "A lot of inspiration came from reading your website." Nice!

A little bit of old, a little bit of new, and a ton of DIY prettiness makes Katies room welcoming and sweet. Thanks for sharing, Jessica!

What a great room, Jessica! I love how it's a little bit girly, but not overboard. And it feels like a room your daughter will be happy with for a long time. Kudos on the quilt, too!

*sigh* I was afraid that gorgeous quilt was going to turn out to be handmade... and it is. You're so fortunate to have such skill and patience.

I may have to rip off your color scheme for one of my miniature projects -- it is too pretty.

Thank you!

Wende - it's really, really easy. If you can sew at all, even a tiny bit, you can make this quilt. It's from a pattern called "Turning Twenty" and just requires 20 fat quarters. Really simple, promise! I had it ready for binding in a couple of days.
