Nursery Tour: Maya's Ikea Nursery with a Touch of the Caribbean

Name: Maya
Location: Brooklyn, NY

Perryne wrote us and called this, "our Ikea nursery." It's a great example of what a trip or two to Ikea can do. But add a few personal touches- in this case, fabric purchased in the Caribbean, and you've got a unique, budget-friendly space. The fabric, mounted on canvases, became the starting point for this colorful nursery. They really stand out against the more neutral palette in the rest of the room.

Art in the nursery doesn't have to be expensive, but we do believe it should be personal.

Perryne writes:
I wanted unique wall art but did not have a big budget for it. Using the fabric I purchased, I bought art canvases at a local art supply store, cut the fabric allowing it to wrap around the canvas and stapled the fabric to the canvas.

Having a budget doesn't necessarily have to be constrictive. It can actually be freeing, and help you focus on the aspects/accessories you really love.

Perryne explains:
We worked with a limited budget for the nursery. Many of the basic items are from IKEA (we also looked on craigslist), which made it really affordable. During the process, I realized that by merely investing in some unique accessories I could really personalize the nursery space. For example, the flower stool I found at a Brooklyn children’s store which also functions as storage and a stepping stool and the Classic Fisher Price Family A Frame House I bought at a children’s consignment store.

Finally, we asked Perryne what her favorite part of the end result was:

Sometimes I will catch our daughter quietly sitting in her room and just exploring, pulling things off the shelves, flipping through her books, or kissing her Celeste stuffed elephant-I like to think that she is getting real joy from her nursery space, and for me that is the best end result.

This is a really nice nursery. There are lots of bright colors, but the room seems calming because of the white and beige in the background.

Shows that you can buy a lot of things from Ikea without the room feeling like an Ikea showroom. Cute!

Calm, clean, simple . . . I love it! We are setting up our playroom for our baby Zoe right now, and we're looking for storage / shelving. Is your cube shelving from Ikea?
