Name: Maya and Zane
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
One of our favorite movies is Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times, so it's no surprise we were enchanted by Zane's cog-filled, cute robot-inspired room. Zane's mom, Maya, was gracious enough to share his space with us...
A whimsical and fun room, with bold colors and robots, robots, robots, Zane’s room is sure to bring him years of fun. Of her design style and philosophy, Maya tells us, "Our style is modern but ensuring comfort. Our inspiration came from the robot painting my husband, Pat, did. He had no intentions of it being a painting for the nursery and when he was finished I looked at it and said 'Let's do something around that for the nursery!'"

She continues, "Everything else took shape from there. We like to mix the old with the new so we added in some vintage robots on the shelves with antique toys from my husband's grandfather. It gives it a nice feel with the more modern gears on the walls."
The gears, the room’s focal point, were cleverly painted by Maya’s husband using a small projector and tracing them onto the wall with chalk, "The large gears were from a font my husband had (he's a designer so we have all kinds of crazy fonts)...After tracing the chalk, he painted each of them by hand. We then printed out these same gears onto colored card stock to use them for the mobile."

Other items in the room include a crib from Target, vintage robot toys, a Prince Lionheart Wheely cow bug ride, and low VOC paint from Lowe's.
When asked for advice on how to approach the nursery-decorating process, Maya replied, "Find one piece of inspiration and then run from there! It could be a painting, a piece of fabric or a small toy. Try to look at other ideas you like and twist them to make them your own. We never realized how much Zane would love the gears. He now points to them and we describe the color and shapes to him. They're a great learning tool!"
Thank you, Maya and Zane.
Love it! The robot painting is fabulous, and the gears are so fun.

That is a fabulous room. I like how it's a theme but not shoved down your throat. Did you make the cog wall stickers or find them online somewhere? Well done!

Does anyone know where I can find this crib or who makes it? I didn't see anything like it on Target's website. Thanks!

Great room. Modest budget with lots of flair. I love the cogs and love that although there is a theme it isn't in your face. Nicely done.

Love this room, was thinking about robots for our expected son's room. Only thing I would change is the ugly brown color on the ceiling.

paperdollsforboys, the text says that Maya's husband traced them with chalk using a projector, and then painted them.

The vintage toys are neat. I think offbeat kids rooms are great. Since we share a family bed we never used a crib or nursery (yes, its safe -- read research by Dr. James McKenna)...so we started decorating it when he turned about 1 1/2 to use as an extra play area. Bonus -- we don't worry about him "growing out of it."
