Wooden door hangers are the key here- pick them up at your craft store along with craft paint and paint pens. You can make them as crafty or as modern and minimal as you like.

when my daughter was a baby, i simply divided the clothes by using different colored hangers.

I just cut out cereal boxes into circles and cut a slit in the bottom to facilitate putting them on the rod. Works great!
Not as pretty for sure, but practically free!
