DIY Book Display
Reader Project

2010-01-11-hiskia1.jpg

Ohdeedoh reader Hiski wrote in to tell us about her great idea for an easy DIY book display. She told us she was 'inspired by the corner library I saw 30 september on Ohdeedoh, I started seeking for ready-made shelves to do something similar." Jump below to find out how she did it.

Hiskia used picture ledges she found Dutch store Praxis to create this great installment. For those with access to IKEA, she suggests using the Ribba picture ledges . This is great idea and part of the reason why we think so is because we did the same thing in our older son's room using rows of IKEA's Ribba.

Thanks, Hiskia!

We just picked up the Ribba ledges this weekend for my son's room, so it's great to see another example of this idea executed successfully. Looks fantastic! I hope that our little library turns out as well.

This is really cute! As a parent, I always worry about my kids climbing anything that looks like "steps" or a ladder. Any issues with climbing?

@applesnkids no issues with climbing. I gave her a little stool to use for the higher ledges to prevent she uses the first ledges to cllimb on.

Hi mimisunise:

Try a retailer like West Elm:

There's more shelves like this at CB2. Also, check out "rain gutter" bookshelves (seriously - there's posts on Ohdeedoh about them)

I'm also in an IKEA-deprived area :(

I bought shelves through homedecorators.com and have been happy with them:

Also the Container Store has wall shelves:

This may be an odd question, but what is the name of the rabbit books on the second shelf from the top? Someone gave us a toy version of that rabbit, and my twin girls LOVE it. I did not realize that the rabbit also appeared in books, and I would like to get some of those books for them! Thank you!

@PhillyGirl33 - the bunny is a character created by the Dutch author/illustrator Dick Bruna. She's known as Miffy in the English books. Her Dutch name is Nijntje. Check out the website: http://www.miffy.com/

I am also sans-Ikea, and found these shelves at Walmart that are specifically made ready to finish or paint.

They're a little bit shorter than the Ikea ones, but with additional searching there might be longer ones.

Love love love this. This is a great way to display something you already have with tons of color and fun all the while promoting books. As a librarian, I could love this more!
