Einat wrote in to share her storage solution for her daughter's hair accessories. We love that it allows her daughter to see everything at once herself and think this idea could be used for all kinds of bits and bobs you need to organize.
I have a 2-year-old daughter who loves her hair accessories (barrettes, pins, rubber bands, bows, headbands, etc.). I couldn't keep up with all of them until I found a great and simple organizational solution...
I purchased a jewelry hanger from The Container Store with different size, clear pockets. I color coded the items such as barrettes and rubber bands, etc. and placed them in the smaller pockets, and larger items such as headbands and even sunglasses were placed in the larger pockets.

The organizer is two-sided and hangs in my daughter's closet. When she wants to look through and pick out her hair accessories, I hang the organizer on the door knob (at her eye level). The organizer has see-through pockets so it is easy to see all of the items. When she's done, she can clean up the mess by herself.
Thanks for sharing this with Ohdeedoh, Einat. We love to see real-world, real-parent solutions!
Great idea. I have one of these that I actually use for jewelry. But this gives me the idea of hanging one next to my son's little desk, so he can color code his crayons. He is by nature much more organized than me, and flies into a rage when he can't find a particular color. Would be great for matchbox cars too. Not my aesthetic, but he would love having them on the wall where he could see them.

I use this same organizer in my laundry room for spare buttons, thread, lint brush, little stain remover tubes, batteries, spare hooks and whatnot. It's great! I also use it in my closet for jewelry and hair baubles, since I don't have much surface space. My sister has 3 little girls and uses this for their hair accessories, too.

PS: also great in a baby's closet for pacifiers, clips, little bows, tiny socks and hats, rattles, etc.

Another idea: My mom created a felt faced "girl" with yarn braids that hung from one of my closet door handles and I could store all my barrettes on her braids! I plan to make one for my daughter too.

Egg cartons. I'm not joking. You can paint them up and decorate however you like (stickers, papier mâché). We buy eggs anyway, and we hold onto some cartons. When you're done you can recycle.

I am currently using a felt tree where I just stick my little girls' velcro baby bows.
