How To: Paint a Mural

2008-02-22-birdy mural.jpg

Not only has Maria painted a fantastic mural on her son's wall, she has carefully laid out her process in a tutorial for all the aspiring muralists out there. Most of the murals we come across are either done freehand or with a projector, but Maria chose a method which takes some computer know-how, which many of us have more of than artistic ability.

She started by purchasing an inexpensive vector illustration at istockphoto which she then traced onto a small piece of foam board as a test run. By painting the mural in a small sample size she was able to anticipate and plan for some tricky spots down the road. Using Illustrator and Photoshop, she resized the image to fit the dimensions of the wall and printed it out on letter-size pieces of paper which she then assembled into a full-scale version. Next she cut out the illustration and taped it into place on the wall for tracing. Finally, it was time to paint which she did with a foam brush, using painter's tape as a guide in a few places.

She has carefully outlined her process, and provided links to photos, in a detailed tutorial on her blog, Mafe Maria, which we highly recommend you check out. Maria, we think this looks great and we thank you for both the inspiration and education!

To answer helloolleh's question...

The crib is from this collection (I also loved it for its simplicity). And the bedding I made myself : )
