IdeaPaint in Kids' Rooms

2009-03-ideapaint.jpg

Magnetic paint and chalkboard paint may be getting nudged out of the way for dry-erase paint! When we came across this photo we stopped to check it out because of the beautiful tree mural, but when we read more we learned about IdeaPaint which these parents are using as a drawing surface for their five-year-old daughter.

"IdeaPaint is a patent-pending single-coat roller-applied paint that transforms any smooth surface into a high performance dry-erase writing surface." We can think of tons of great uses for this paint in an office setting, but also for the home: calendars, schedules, grocery lists, etc.

Shannon Jordan, one of the contributors to 2modern Design Talk, the terrific blog of modern design store 2modern posted about using IdeaPaint as a canvas in her daughter's bedroom. Not only is the result beautiful (and wait 'til her daughter really gets going), but it highlights a terrific use for this intriguing new product. Read more about Shannon's project and her tips for applying IdeaPaint here.

I love it, and we thought about it when we decorated our playroom, but in addition to a nearly 5 year old, we have a 2 year old. I wasn't sure he'd understand why writing on one wall was okay but not on others. We may revisit it when he's older, though as an ex-teacher, I know that dry erase stains clothes horribly.

Love it! So much better than chalkboard paint - no dust!

I just checked out their website and WOW! $199.00 per can seems awfully steep.

I love this, but no way! If my kids color on their bed or clothes with chalk, it wipes off. If they color on anything with dry erase markers, it is very hard if not impossible to remove. We do a lot of arts and crafts, but not in their room. Also, I like the old fashioned school house feel of the chalkboard paint.

At first I was wondering if this would work on my fridge, but at $199 a can maybe I should just get a new fridge instead!
