Let Sleeping Babies Lie with a Door Sign?

bellsmall110209.jpg

When our son was a baby he was an extremely light sleeper and we were cautious not to create any loud noise (say, a sneeze) that might disturb him. Unfortunately many naps were brought (literally) to a screeching halt by the innocent ringing of our doorbell by the UPS man, mail carrier or Con Ed rep.

We fantasized about leaving a sign by our buzzer, but, after all, we still needed our packages, the mail and the gas meter read. So we were intrigued to see the sign above on the blog of our Brooklyn neighbor Katia who spotted it hanging on a local family's door. Genius? Overkill? Do you have a sign like this or have you spotted one in your neighborhood?

I've seen written notes up on doors. What I really need is a "Please don't use your leaf blower directly underneath my sleeping babies window" sign...

When my daughter was a baby, so she would sleep through just about anything. Now that she is a toddler, that has changed! If the doorbell rings during her nap, she wakes up, all excited to see who is at the door! I have covered up the doorbell before with a post-it saying, "Please do not ring doorbell." It seems to work well (until it falls off). I would love a sign like this for days when I know a package is coming, or days when lots of people come to the door (like Halloween)!

I made one for our door. It's just a printout on cardstock with a ribbon to hang it by the doorbell. It works!

Now that he's older, my son can sleep through anything, but I've held on to the sign anyway. So useful during election season when you don't feel like chatting with the leaflet brigade!

I just taped a note over the doorbell that said "baby- please knock". Since you would have to move the note to ring the bell, no one rang the bell. And I could hear the door knock just fine (may not work if you have a huge house though), and the knock was not loud enough to wake up my son :)

Mine has been a lifesaver!

I have a small, very cute scrapbook style sign that a friend gave me when my two year old daughter was born. It simply states that baby is napping and asks that people knock quietly. People always comment on how cute it is, what a good idea it is, etc. And since she's a light sleeper/ poor napper we are very thankful! Sometimes I forget to take it down though...

Geeze, loraena, you lucked out with a good shower gift! I'm saving that idea, I never heard of it.

We disconnected our doorbell. We had a do-not-disturb sign early on when WE desperately needed our naps, but now just the sound of feet on the porch will wake up our toddler so never mind signage.

We never reconnected the doorbell, though. Or turned the ringers back on more than one phone for that matter! It's nice having a disruption-reduced house, we like it. (Now I sound antisocial, but seriously, how often do people we want to see drop by when we don't know they are coming? Never.)

I have a handwritten sign that I put up during naps because I work from home, so every sleeping moment is precious to me (and my editors). It has worked 99.2 percent of the time.

I'm crafty, so I've always been tempted to make a sign along these lines (warning: bad words):

When I was little (mid 70's), Mom said the regular sign she made didn't work because people would ring before reading it, so she took a photo of me napping and laminated that with "Nap Time: Please Knock!" That worked much better. :) And it looked really cute!

I can't do it, however. A human approaches our door and the dog goes ballistic, whether they ring the bell or not. Sigh.

I've seen Dutch birth announcements that list when mother and child are sleeping, which I thought was really cool. When my oldest was born, we posted a sign on our door stating that we napped from such-and-such to such-and-such a time. People who did not have children thought it was rude, but people who did have children thought it was the cleverest thing and wished they had done the same.

After seeing an entry last week about recycling old refrigerator magnets -- and having our nap subsequently interrupted AGAIN by our Nosy Parker neighbor ringing the bell -- I think I am going to whip up a "baby sleeping" sign of my own.

When we know people are coming we put up a please knock sign.

As a childless person, I have to say that I like the idea. I'd feel horrible if I rang the bell and woke the kid up on accident. I think I'd prefer a "Please knock softly" instead, though, otherwise I wouldn't know if I could knock or not without waking anyone up.

Notes such as these are perfectly acceptable! And that's regardless of a sleeping baby---I can't stand the shrill buzz of our doorbell so there's a note covering it and my children are well out of their naps!

Doorbells and alarm clocks-no thanks!

I can't remember the last time my doorbell rang at all. Maybe it's because I'm in a very urban area, but friends call when they're outside, and we don't get salespeople or anything around here.
