Lost Toy Contingency Plan

lost-toy-contingency.jpgIf you're planning on doing any traveling during the holidays, then no doubt your child's favorite toy or blanket is on your list of things to pack. But what measures do you take to make sure that same toy or blanket makes it safely back home? If, like us, a cold chill runs down your spine at the thought of explaining to your little one that the toy they've taken to bed every single night for three years is, ahem, "no longer with us", then you might want to have a lost toy contingency plan. Fortunately, Erin at Wee Baby Stuff has one already written up...

Among the many excellent tips Erin suggests is this one:

Be prepared to offer a reward, for example "$50 and good Karma to the person who finds..." (Think $50 is too much? How much is 2 weeks of sleepless nights worth to you?)

Good point. Maybe make that a hundred bucks.

Another good tip is to buy another of the beloved toy or blanket, and stash it in a closet in case there is need. Yes, the teddy (or whatever) will be all clean and new, but you could always tell the child that he went to the spa. My mom recently suggested that I might want to buy another of my favorite baby blanket, as it might turn out to be my daughter's "blankey." (She's only two months old, so she hasn't gotten attached to one yet.) However, the blanket was a very generous gift and I can't imagine buying another $120 LaRucci just to stash.

I had a teddy bear that I was in love with. I never knew until I was older that my mom had 2. She would alternate them so that when one was dirty she could wash it without a meltdown.

My sister-in-law bought 2 of the same little snuggly blankets as my shower gift. Smart woman! I've rotated them so they are equally loved and there's a backup, just in case. Now on the other hand losing "Bunny" would be a disaster!

When my son was born I bought him a very soft amy coe blanket (he calls baba) that he soon grew very attached too. I should have bought more than one, his blanket started falling apart after 2 years and my husband and i were expecting the worse when "baba" would no longer be around. While on a trip to texas I happend to get very lucky and found another blanket just like the discontinued amy coe blanket at a Ross. I've learned to always buy 2!!!
