A couple of years ago I saw the original Eames in a hick-town antique store for $45. I still hate myself for not snatching it up. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Why are you so torn? The money saved on something like that can be used for something else or put into a 529.

You should be torn about posting about it in general. There is no originality whatsoever since 95% of the nurseries posted on here have that chair.

Stickyricemama - torn because I have conflicted feelings about Big Box stores ripping off the artistic and design endeavors of others. On the one hand, I love that great designs are more financially accessible to me, but it's also taking money out of the pocket of a, usually, smaller or independent designer.

Elle78 - originality is great, but I'd rather live in a comfortable home that makes me happy even if some of the pieces are well represented in others' homes. Is this a bad time to mention I have a "Keep Calm" poster?

Elle78 - if something is beautiful and works well, it makes sense that lots of people would want it. Originality has its place, but it's exhausting and sometimes pointless to pursue it above all else, especially when the reason something is popular is because it's just plain good. And a popular design can give distinction to a certain time and place - it's delightful to find something your grandparents had that "everyone" had, b/c it says something about their shared history with their generation and place.

you can get the knockoffs all over ebay.

i would get one, except they're always in just white. on the modern dose site it shows other colors (although a bit glossy) but they're not available.

you shouldn't feel bad about getting a knockoff. save some money, plus, the "real" eames ones aren't even fiberglass anymore, so the knocks are almost the same. if you want a more "real" one get a fiberglass one from modernica.

The Herman Miller Eames Rocker is $449, and the Modernica versions of these are $375 - both are made right here in the United States (Michigan and Southern California, respectively). Those prices are really not that much for a piece of quality furniture that you'll keep for years and years.

Wanna take a wild guess where these Overstock and Target chairs are made?

I find it sad that AT bloggers don't see that we all need to help keep our neighbors employed by encouraging the purchase of the US made items rather than filling our homes with cheap imported knockoffs and watching as our skilled workers and craftsmen are laid off, factories closed and poverty imported to the US. Without their productivity, work and spending, other businesses that depend on their spending will continue to lay off workers and close - and your job could be next.

@CMcB, well, i have to question the comfort factor you mention. there are 1,000,000 other rockers to buy if you're interested in comfort.
