Sure, you can do the babyproofing yourself. You can find free instructions online at parenting.com/babytalk, and other sources. But if you're really strapped for time, or just want to be certain you don't miss something, visit The International Association for Child Safety to find a babyproofer in your area.

Seriously? Do we really need professional baby-proofers in our lives? My kid is 16 months old and I remember the paranoid phase, but come on! You watch what your baby does. When they get old enough to crawl, you put a gate where you need it. When they can open drawers, you install those annoying latches. It's not rocket science.

I agree with gertie. I don't even think you need the latches: you just make sure there's nothing baby shouldn't touch on low shelves/cabinets in low drawers.

I think it is more about the speed. First, they know which type of latches, gates and outlet covers to buy, so the extra paranoid parents don't have to search for reviews online. Second, they install them five times faster than an average husband who also looks at the stage of the moon before he even thinks about tackling a job like that.
Plus they have everything they need right away, so you don't need to run to Home Depot or Babies R Us three times.

I would have paid handsomely to have somebody come in and professionally install safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs in our new house. These kinds of gates are awful to install if you don't have a hard surface on both sides (wall or wood post) to screw the gate into place -- our spindles are iron -- and it's so much worse if you don't know what you're doing. Took me a week and a bunch of trips to the hardware store before I had them right.
