Kiddo Kidkeeper Proximity Alarm

2008-12-18-alarm.jpg

Have you ever been in a store or park or other public space, turned around and didn't see your child immediately? It can happen no matter how diligent you are. Perhaps the Kiddo Kidkeeper can be of assistance.

The Kidkeeper is a proximity alarm consisting of a transmitter (attached to the child) and a receiver carried by the parent. You can set a distance on the receiver limiting how far your child can wander. Anything beyond that point and the alarm will sound. Find out more about it here.

The idea is intriguing but we're not sure about its utility. Do any Ohdeedoh readers have the Kiddo or something similar?

yes -- we tried something similar on our first major vacation overseas with our daughter. We didn't find it to be terribly useful, and gave up on it fairly quickly. We tended to keep tight tabs on her without it in any case.

We have the giggle bug, a similar concept. Our toddler has just now reached the wandering-off stage despite our firmest attempts at keeping him reigned in and holding hands. (he's a textbook case of the terrible twos). I think it's a great concept, especially if you are trying to manage more than one little one at a time.

My husband bought something like it, and I never used it on my child because I learned not to take my eyes off him at playgrounds and parks (big city urban parks that are not fenced in); I always felt the device gave me a false sense of security and would make me lapse. If my child started to bolt on the playground, then I ran after him, which gave me good exercise, and we had many fun chases this way.

We also had horrible layovers on trips, and when my child was a young runner, he ran off from the terminal and kept going, so I followed and chased him down.

He's grown out of that phase. Our little monitor was a waste of money.

stickyricemama -- our daughter was a bolter too. I ditto all your comments. As for airport terminals, one time we had to wait several hours, and managed to find fairly deserted conveyor sidewalks (or whatever they are called) -- for almost 2 hours, my husband travelled down the conveyor belt, while our daughter ran alongside, and then they ran back together... over, and over. Slept like a charm on the plane.

Parents who require one of these instead of keeping a natural close eye on their children probably shouldn’t be parents. But then again for rebellious children it might be useful but the child will easily work out how to remove the alarm.
