Numi Baby Gate

2009-08-06-numi.jpg

When it comes to babyproofing, safety is the priority. But we've never understood why aesthetics and good design can't play supporting roles. Take a look at the baby gates in your house - we try not to look at ours as much as possible. But check out this thing of beauty.

The Numi extending wood gate is all brushed metal and natural hardwood. It features double-action locking for extra safety and easy installation and quick release. So what's the catch? It's not the price. We found it at Tesco for £60.00 (about $117), which is comparable to most of the quality baby gates you'll find at retail. The British Pound reference gave it away. We haven't found a US retailer that carries Numi yet, so if you really want it, you'll have to find a UK-retailer to ship it to you.

I would invest in a gate like this if it were to be a permanent fixture (as a pet gate for example). But for toddlers, the gates are up for maybe like a year or year and a half? Not that long. Although, I guess if you plan on expanding your family it may not be a bad investment.

It's not that much of an investment--we recently had to get gates and the more solid kind that screw into the wall, such as for stairs, are getting up to $100 anyway. I'd happily pay a bit more money for an attractive gate.

this is beautiful... but i think $117 is far too much for a baby gate. not to mention the shipping costs.

I don't think $117 is too much to spend in order to avoid an ugly fate... I'd happily pay it, but we are now past the gate stage. We had ours up for about 3 years total with both kids, so I don't think $40/year is unreasonable. And I am sure you can resell it.

As an Interior Designer, I would get this for my clients with toddlers or pets. When you have gone to the expense to design & decorate your home with style & flair, why have an eyesore in the room. Even if it is for a short time. I think I would have other uses for it. It looks like a great magazine, newspaper rack mounted horizontally.

okay, that looks nice, and i'm sure you could resell it on craigslist to recoup half the 'investment' but for my money, spray paint is a good enough solution. i thought this looked great:

my cheap target gates have lasted through my boston terrier, my preschooler and my toddler. they don't necessarily add to the look of the house, but they still contain the doggie.

I would certainly pay this price! Not happy about it but I'd be more unhappy with a fugly plastic white gate.

I'm happy to announce this is a relatively easy purchase as Amazon.uk has plenty of them. I am in the process of negotiating the price with one of the sellers.

Wow, and it comes in a very attractive all-aluminium style as well. Damn. I want that.

I irrationally want this.

that IS the prettiest baby gate I've seen.... but honestly, I'm not going to spend almost $120 probably $50 in shipping for one gate. There are a couple nice aluminum/wood gates sold in the US for much less $ (and cheaper shipping).

My theory is that while I want to avoid ugly gates when possible, I also don't want to break the bank for something temporary. I've been going the happy compromise route ;-)

It's pretty decent looking. We paid close to $70 for our step-pedal gate, so the price of this one isn't too much more. If I had a high-design living space I'd invest in one of these, no doubt. Or maybe have some custom made.

Cloth_diapering - can you elaborate on how you managed to order from Amazon.uk? I tried and it looks like there are no shipping options to the U.S. I must be missing something....

Do they have anything that does not bolt into the stairs? I have an open concept home where the opening of the staris is about 52". I had to special order which cost me over $200 CAD with the extenders and the wrap around....and that's just for the bottom of the steps...
