Tundra Fire Extinguishing Spray

We're focusing in on safety and green living in your home this month at Ohdeedoh, and one of the most basic safety items to have is a fire extinguisher. But have you ever felt intimidated by the typical fire extinguisher that shows up in rental apartments? We have.

If you actually had a fire, are you sure your extinguisher would work, and more importantly, would you know how to work it- pin release and all? Plus, on top of that, they're usually bulky enough that they're hidden in a kitchen cabinet or elsewhere out of immediate reach.

And that is why we're considering this spray from Tundra.

The good thing about the Tundra Fire Extinguishing Spray is that it's lighter, easier to lift, and simpler to use- just spray like an aerosol can. It's small, but the discharge time is actually four times longer than traditional extinguishers. Sounds like a great safety item to have around in the kitchen.

I haven't used this brand but I used a similar model in a time of crisis. It was not powerful enough to put out two burning kitchen towels. (Of course I didn't know what it was at the time.) No power, little coverage, no strength. I had to resort to using tongs to try and pick up whatever was flaming and get it to the sink. Luckily the cabinet didn't catch on fire.

We know have quite a large, traditional model mounted in our kitchen. And we know how it use it.

I have these! Because I want my kid to be able to use it. Because I don't want to figure out in the middle of the fire that I have no idea how to use the conventional extinguisher, or that it's too heavy and big and was stored somethere far away...

We have a couple of smaller, traditional extinguishers in our apartment. One kitchen-type in the kitchen, easy to reach if there's a fire, and another in the hall. You can get them at any hardware store, I think we got ours at Target. They're not heavy, and they weren't expensive. I saw one recently that was very cool and high-design-y, but I wonder if someone might not realize its function in an emergency, as it was all white and didn't look like an extinguisher. Better off being able to see one, grab it, and use it, as fires can grow and spread rapidly. I never understand how people can have all the required smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors...but no fire extinguisher.

We have a small traditional extinguisher, but our landlord just dropped one of these off and it does seem less intimidating to operate.
