Good Idea: Use Colanders to Store Bath Toys

2009-10-22-bath.jpg

A few interesting bath toys are essential for a successful bath. But what's the best way to store them when bath time is over?

We really like this idea of using bright colored colanders set on the edge of the tub. Excess water drains out of the bottom so you don't end up with a bunch of moldy toys. Plus they can be used as bath toys themselves.

We do exactly this, I found a funky lime colander a while ago and had to use it for our bath toys - no mouldering smoulderings for us!!!

You can check it out here:

This is a good idea in theory, I think. However, my metal colander (which looks a lot like those above) rusted out pretty quickly. I would think exposure to even more water would make that worse.

But it's a cute idea, so I hope I'm the only one!

Our bathtub ledge is not wide enough for a colander to sit on (unless we want water running onto our floor), but we do keep a plastic colander in the tub. We found it is the #1 most preferred bath toy. We put a washcloth inside, our son dumps water into it, and we pick it up to create a little "shower" of water. He loves it!

I use those old milk crates for the bath toys because we have so many. It works the same as the colander with the holes at the bottom and sides but fits better under the sink because it is square. I like to use boys shapes for storage as much as possible because they always seem easier to put away.

Good idea, but these would be too small for my kids stuff. I bought a small carolina blue rubber trug in a local store for £2 (kind of like these, but different colour http://www.webbsdirect.co.uk/category.asp?cat_id=YTRUGS&gclid=CK6L7u641J0CFWlr4wodY0IRsQ or these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pack-litre-bucket-gorilla-bucket/dp/B002GCRQH0/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1256344744&sr=1-23 ) and then drilled holes in the bottom. It holds a good amount of toys (a tomy bath "rescue center" as well as various boats), drains out the holes, and is easy to wash out when it starts to get manky. Years ago had one of the original "boon" froggy hanging up things, but found it too small AND it wouldn't stay on the wall. This has worked much better for us. I have even drilled holes in other coloured trugs for friends which they love too.

We bought a small net from Asda (part of UK Walmart) for £1. It has two suckers on it, at the top of the net, which attach to the wall. The toys go in it, they drip through the net and if it gets dirty (which it hasn't yet), just chuck it in the washing machine.

we use a cheap $1 colander we found at The Dollar Store and keep it in the bath tub.

After a few hours, when all the water has drained from the toys we then empty them into a cute red toy bucket that we purchased from PB Kids that has "bath toys" engraved on it's side. This stops the bucket from rusting and looks adult enough in our bath room - which is where our children prefer to bathe.

Since the bath tub is so deep, no one can see the empty colander and everything is put away and tidy.
