Another Front Facing Book Display

2009-12-02-bookdisplay.jpg

A question we get asked a lot by parents involves front facing book displays - where to buy and how to make.

We really appreciate the simplicity of this DIY book display we found over at Mondo Cherry. The shallow box frame doesn't look too difficult to put together. For more inspiration check out some of the other book displays we've blogged:

I'm looking to use the dead space under a large window for books and thought that shallow front-facing book storage would look great and be the safest (read: unclimbable) option. Anyone use IKEA's ribba picture ledge for books?

This past weekend I created one myself out of some fabric and an old DVD rack we had in the basement. Now that I know how easy it was to do and that it works well I'm planning to redo it with nicer fabric, line the pockets, and make them deeper but here's a photo of my first attempt:

Ever since entering my hanging book display (aka "book sling") in Ohdeedoh's February Jump Start contest last year, I've made several of these for Etsy customers and many readers of my blog have made their own following my tutorial:

If you're familiar with Meg from Sew Liberated, I made one for her son, too:

RSB - I bought Ribba picture ledges to use for a book display, but haven't put them up yet. We have a longer one for pictures in our bedroom and I've used it to display special books as well. Even though it's not up yet, I think it'll be a perfect book display.
