Good Idea: Turn a Bookcase into a Front Facing Book Display

2009-11-05-bookcase.jpg

Front facing book displays are a popular option for kids' books. It makes it easier for them to identify the books they want to read. So what if you only have a standard bookcase?

Maybe you have one of the ubiquitous IKEA Billy bookcases somewhere in the house that can be repurposed. If so, just affix a few strips of moulding from your local hardware store to each shelf. For less than $20 (depending on the size of the bookshelf), you get an instant book display.

I'm filing this under "ridiculously simple awesome ideas I can't believe I didn't think of."

Thank you! This will be *great* when Bunny starts reading independently!

Can't you people show a project that doesn't involve something from IKEA. They don't have IKEA in or anywhere near Omaha. IKEA doesn't ship the majority of their stuff online and if they do, you pay at least twice the price of the item just for shipping. Ridiculous.

muwach - this hack could just as easily be done with any inexpensive particleboard bookcase purchased from walmart or target

Leigh Anne- I know, I'm just sick to death of seeing cool projects that all include IKEA ingredients. It's not limited to this blog only.

I agree, EmmieB... I've been eyeing one of those sling-type bookcases and we've had an old bookcase just waiting to be transformed all along!

My $0.02 - I've always viewed "IKEA Hacks" to include any mass-marketed, inexpensive modular furniture. The design changes don't necessarily require the specific IKEA piece to be functional.

Thank you for this!!! We have an Ikea Hensvik bookcase for our kids and it's a constant mess because our girls just throw the books on there instead of neatly shelving them. I think this may be our solution! Will definitely try out this hack.
