Skulls in the Nursery

01skull.jpgWe came across this Modern Nursery bedding complete with real cow skull decor and wondered what parents thought of the wild, wild west look for the nursery. Unlike the ol' skull and crossbones applied to some nursery trends, this cowboy and cow skull theme has a real history and seriousness about it. What do you think? Another shot below:

I think its sort of cute, and I'm not the kind of person to appreciate dead animals on walls. I would, however, put it in a less scary spot (right above the crib).

I agree. While I think this looks kinda nice from MY perspective, I'm not sure baby will like to see this looking down on them when they wake up in the middle of the night!

Aesthetically, it works. The tones in the bone and horns looks great with that wall color and the bedding. Cowboy/western movies have always featured this familiar icon.

But, a nursery is room that is designed to nurture a burgeoning new life. The skull of a deceased animal feels incompatible with that. Yin/yang, life/death in the same place? Maybe. But I guess I'm a bit too superstitious to feature a symbol of a life lost directly over the place where my child sleeps.

It looks ok, but it is SO west Texas decor. Ugh. I know way too many people whose version of "decorating" consists of putting a dead animal on the wall.

I love it. If it is there since babyhood, a kid shouldn't find it disturbing. It is a great non kitsch way to go with the western theme.

I really don't like it hanging over the crib! It might be okay in another section of the room.

Definatly not my first choice having a turkey, fox, and skull heads hanging around. But our son (15 months) dosent pay much attention to them. He dosent know better truly. I think if the bull horns were pointed up here they would look less scary! Have you see the stuffed animal (teddi bear looking ) wall mounts. They are super cute and would look friendler in a baby room. I am from Texas so this isnt shocking for me to see. Supprised no one mentioned the dead skin rug on the floor being offensive? That too is a dead animal.

I dig it, just not right over the crib. It's not like a taxidermy bison or moose with eyeballs and such, it's more Georgia O'Keefe and organic looking, definitely adding interest and texture to the room. And on it's own, as displayed, it makes a rather nice graphic statement. My toddler has a slightly vintage cowboy groove going on in his room, and this would work.

I have a skull like that in my living room, with a big, vintage, red, faux poppy tucked behind the horn...it's my tribute to Georgia O'keeffe. I love the idea for a western inspired kids room. I don't know what my son would have thought of it as a baby, but he's been asking for one in his room since he was 5 (he's 7 now) He loves all things nature, animal skulls and bones included. I think the form, color and texture of the skull is quite beautiful.

Just a comment on the all people freaking out about 'dead things in the house'...

i think it's always hilarious to read people reactions. If you're into it, go for it.

OK, skulls of dead animals are right up there with giant dildos for kids' room decorations. I wouldn't put either in there regardless of whether the child knows what it is.

stickyricemama-
thanks for making my point! irrational, extreme and hilarious.

You should look at the glass as half full:
Cows contribute greatly to global warming via their flatulence, right? well, this parent is making a statement, teaching their child to stand up to this terrible threat!

I cannot even believe a cow skull was put in the same category as a "giant dildo". That is crazy.

There aren't eyes or a giant tongue hanging out of it's mouth. It doesn't have a festering cow flesh smell to it! It's just a set of bones! There's nothing scary about it.

Would I have two giant horns hung over the crib? God no! But somewhere else where it wont fall on an unsuspecting child, absolutely!

I don't like the western theme period, so luckily I will never have to face this conundrum! Hooray!

I actually live in the "West" anyway, well, Northern BC, so dead animals on walls, either skeleton or taxidermy, are a fixture of every household around, and I'd rather not include them in my own. I feel no particular revulsion, per se, but it's about the same feeling that some of you guys get seeing the "Keep Calm" posters. That's skulls and disembodied heads, for me.

Ugh no. Also how scary is it for a baby to look up and see a sinister looking dead animal's skull facing it and the potential for it to fall into the crib. It's always odd to see staged baby nurseries that are impractical and/or unsafe. Is realistic considered unstylish?

My husband is a hunter and a native Texan and he would love to have this in our son's room...maybe not a real skull though! I am trying to have a vintage cowboy theme in his room so I also really like the bedding. This gave me a lot of inspiration!
