apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#17- Lucia's Italian Loft

Name: Betta, Saverio and Lucia
Child's Name and Age: Lucia, 5 years old
Location: Rome, Italy
Size: 807 square ft apartment

Favorite Source:
Due to budget restrictions, that will have to be the ubiquitous ikea, I'm afraid. Plus, children's stuff in Italy tends to be very boring.

What inspired you?

The apartment has high ceilings so we thought it would be cool to have a high bed. We had to renovate the house completely before we moved in last year, and a friend suggested creating the big niche with the high bed. The space below is narrower (60 centimeters) and it can be filled with a
made to measure clothes cabinet in the future.

We now feel that our daugther is too young to sleep "upstairs", so she's still using the iron bed below (well, we like it so much anyway - plus the bed above comes in handy when we have guests sleeping over or one of us has a snorey night :)

Heh heh...a snorey night! I'm trying to come up with lyrics sung to the tune of Don MaClean's "Starry Starry Night!" Don't the snores keep Lucia up? At any rate - very nice room and, never be ashamed of the Ikea offerings. They've got really great stuff that almost all grows with the kids and/or serves multiple purposes.

I'm so glad you sumitted Lucia's room to the contest. The touches throughout the room are airy and delightful. The "upstairs" bed is great (and as a family with more than our fair share of snorey nights, I envy the extra bed space; our only option for retreat from the noise is the sofa). I like the idea of building niches to take advantage of the ceiling height.

A quick question about the iron bed -- is that the IKEA Minnen model? My daughter is on the verge of moving from her crib to a bed and I've considered the Minnen for a while now. You mentioned you liked it -- so you find it sturdy enough?

I second One Eyed Daruma's comment about IKEA. So many of their children's items offer ideal leaping off points for individual design choices. We have turned the low bookcase that is in your third photo into my daughters kitchen. Perfect height, totally adaptable to whatever facet of culinary arts currently appeal to her. Hooray IKEA. You have taken basic pieces and created a really appealing space.

Again, such a lovely room

The upper bed is so great - super design! I like that you've designed the room to grow with Lucia - she's a very lucky girl. Your apartment has really lovely bones.
