apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#5 - Patricia, Mike and Mate's Family Travels

Name: Patricia and Mike
Child's Name and Age: Mate, 24 months and baby #2 due in August
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
Size: 800 sq. ft. bungalow

Favorite Source:
Family Travels (for me, traveling to Peru and seeing the creative ways people raise happy families in VERY small spaces with VERY little money and being inspired by the colors and textures of the country)

What inspired you?

I’m originally from Peru and my mother collects old Peruvian textiles (hats, blankets, ponchos). I was inspired to decorate my son’s nursery after looking through her colorful collection and deciding to hang some of my favorite hats above the bookshelf. The rich colors and patterns found in the textiles inspired the purple color of the room, the red curtains, and the colorful accents.

I’m also an artist, so I wanted to fill the room with original art (a mural I painted based on the book “Llama in Pajamas”, paintings by my brother and folk art collected during trips to Peru).

Great Tip:

Personalize! make the room your own (it should reflect your family’s personality and passions. Find one-of-a-kind art work or make your own/showcase your collections)

Such an inspiring room! The color contrast in the changing table photo, and the way your art is set off against those colors, is so striking. And what a great idea, integrating family collections into a child's room.

What a lucky baby! Such a special room, full of color and love. Very cozy...I want to sleep there! The hats on the wall are very unusual , what a great way to display the family's treasures and heritage.

Love the feel this room has. The use of textiles gives it a very warm, protective energy. And the curtain's yellow stripes are great with that purple, they really pop! Great room in all aspects.

What color! The art work pops in the room. I also love the mural mommie had painted on the wall above the changing table.

What a beautiful room. I would have never thought to use purple on the wall but it helps provide such an inviting look!

I love the contrast of the dark and very warm walls with the sun shining in the window. Looks so cozy.
