Daisy's Big & Bright Room
Small Kids, Big Color Entry # 20

thumbs up

Name: Daisy
Age: Almost 2
Location: Athens, Georgia

Color Inspiration: Daisy was the inspiration. She's a bright, colorful girl with boundless energy. There was so much we wanted to put into the room, but we also wanted to respect how much she loves to run (and run and run and run), so we wanted to make sure we left space to do that...

Give Karen & Daisy a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

Color Inspiration continued: We used the shelving to mark off little stations within the room. There is a train area, a kitchen with a little dinette and baskets for shopping at the farmer's market, a trampoline, a dress up carousel, a flannel board, and a large reading area with raingutter bookshelves. We left a lot of open space for Daisy to run from end to end. The floors are cork, which has been great for sound insulation, and it's not too tough on the already-skinned knees. The bins on the shelves hold everything else we need: art supplies with a huuuuge drop cloth, puppets, musical instruments, blocks, etc.

Tip For Using Color: Don't be afraid of white! (Is that an odd tip for a color contest?) I've never been afraid of color, but this is the first white room we have ever had. It's been great to see how lively the trim color and the toys themselves can make a room. I never feel like I can't buy something for the room because the color's not right. Every color fits in this room.

Colors Used: Sherwin Williams paint
Trim Color: Real Red
Wall Color: Marshmallow

I love the trim color and the door. With such a vibrant color, of course white walls work!

Thanks for the votes and comments, everyone. We love the room too.

We made the rain gutter bookshelves. It took just one length of rain gutter and three brackets each. Less than $12 and ten minutes.

The crates for the Expedit shelves are Target's Itso brand. They fit perfectly!

Love the room. May I ask where the play kitchen is from? We're thinking about Christmas presents for our daughter and the one you have is per-fect.

I don't usually like white walls (or red trim for that matter!) but you have used them so expertly here--the room is bright (but not garish) and playful and so inviting.

My absolute favorite feature is the "raingutter" bookshelf.

They are perfectly suited to Daisy's height so she can see her choices and select her favorite book of the hour. Such a great idea!

Thanks again, all.

The play kitchen is made by Kidcraft. We got it (and almost everything else) off of Craigslist.

I love the way the art is hanging at kid level. I fear my son would have that off the wall in no time, though (and probably winging it down the stairs...)

I like everything about this room. It works so well because
every plaything is within the child's reach. The colors are
bright and inviting. Excellent job.
