Ruby Jane's Bright & Cheery Nursery
Small Kids, Big Color Entry # 37

thumbs up

Name: Ruby Jane
Age: 3 months
Location: Tempe, Arizona

Color Inspiration: Three months ago, after a long wait and with no notice, we got a call telling us a baby girl was being born across the country and we were chosen to be her parents. I adore my three-year-old son, but a baby girl brought out my love for all things girly.

Give Megan & Ruby Jane a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

Color Inspiration continued: I already had and loved the rug. I was just waiting for a chance to use it. When we chose the name Ruby Jane for our little miracle baby, I knew I wanted to take on the challenge of creating a girly space using red instead of pink as the dominant hue. The room is quite small and gets little natural light during the day, so my goal was to make it a bright and cheery space for my little one. Using mainly items we already had, and buying second-hand, we spent less than $100. Now it's my favorite room in the house!

Tip For Using Color: I love to use everyday, regular objects to bring color to a child's room. Things like marbles, buttons, colored pencils, or balls of yarn look great in jars or other containers. My son's room has various colored license plates on the wall. In Ruby's room, I put out colorful shoes (Crocs) in a wash tub and hung her bright-colored hair clips on the wall. I use those hair clips every day and they bring color into the room without buying more "stuff" for her small (10x10) space.

Congratulations on your baby girl and on such a pretty room!

I love how you took one duvet cover and pillow from Ikea and used it to create all of those details throughout the room.

The Callie bedding is on sale now -- super cheap ($5.99 for crib sheet in red.)

I really like the wrought iron thing on the wall with blankets. Where did you get that? What a great way to store blankets.

Love it! We are expecting our second child and our nursery walls are a similar color. I will definitely use this for inspiration, because I love the touches of bright colors throughout the room. Congratulations on your baby girl!

Thanks for the kind comments everyone! I got the iron wine rack from a place called Rod Works. I believe they have a website you can order from. I originally bought it to store towels in because my home at the time didn't have any place for linen storage. Oh -- and mere1975, I bought the Callie bedding after it was on sale, so I got the great deal! Thanks for the heads up! :)

This room just makes me smile! And I agree with everyone, the wine rack turned blanket holder is an ingenious idea.

Adoption! Yay! Congratulations on bringing Ruby into your family.

Your room is wonderful. You did such a great job. My personal favorite is the "bow hanger." We always have such a hard time trying to keep track of our daughter's bows. It's a great idea!

Stunning room - so sunny and bright. Lucky Ruby to have such a lovely first bedroom.

I love the balance between the details and the sense of spaciousness. This is quite a small room in reality, and being able to have interesting features for little eyes to look at without visual cluttering takes true talent.

Congratulations Megan and Shane on a

This room is too cute, I love the raggedy Ann and Andy and the name above the crib, such a happy place for a sweet baby!!

truenb -- yes, the fabric is over an old cork board. We painted the frame and since the frame was stapled around the cork, we used a putty knife to jam the fabric into the edges under the frame tight.

camhill2000 -- the Raggedy Ann and Andy were made by a friend/neighbor of my parents when I was born, so they are extra special to me (as are several other little details in the room created and given by various family members and friends).

Thank you everyone, I blush a little when I read your sweet comments!

This would be my favorite room for curling up with a book and taking a little nappy nap in the hammock! It's comforting and livable, yet very detail oriented. Before I read any of the descriptions, I loved the colorful wall hanging with the flowers on ribbon. Then I realized they were Ruby's hair bows! I guess I need to get me some of those to decorate my walls.:) The room is just beautiful!

Lovely room! Is the red on the sheet and bed skirt a fire engine red or closer to a coral red? Sorry, love the design but it's hard to tell from the pics and I'm trying to match a red chair...thanks!

ElissaB -- funny -- the red of the bed skirt is more rich and the sheet is almost orangey-bright red, but when they are not right next to each other you can't tell they aren't exactly the same. I guess coral red is a good way to describe it. It's a very "IKEA" color to me. Luckily, my rug has red and orange, and red orange, so it works fine for us. If you e-mail me at shaneandmegan@gmail.com I'd be happy to send you a close-up shot.

You are all so kind -- thank you!

I just have to say that I love how feminine the room is without pink. I have always thought that would be something that is hard to do, but this room is such a great example of doing just that, being feminine without too much pink.
The more I look at the pictures, the more I love the room! I love the blanket rack. I love the rug and crib set too! Oh, and I love that you utilize the space on the wall using those shelves along the ceiling.
I'm sure when you turn on the globe lamps at night it feels so magical to be rocking the sweet baby girl you longingly waited for.
I also really love the "Ruby Jane" on the wall. It claims the space in such a colorful and friendly way.
It is all just beautiful!

i love the cheery, welcoming yellow babies room! many of the other infant rooms are a little too busy. too much for a little one to take in considering they can't see colors for a while... just shapes. i'm all for encouraging learning, but some of the others are overkill!

so cute and relaxing and everything in it's place! love it.
