Smaller Cooler 2009: Amber's Room for Elliot

thumbs up

Name/Age: Amber's son Elliot, due in June
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Family: Amber, her husband and their soon-to-arrive son
Room Size: 100 square feet
Division: Baby

Tip for Living Small with Kids: We don't have any advice yet as our little one has not yet arrived. Our philosophy however, is that children do not need tons of "things." Throughout our pregnancy we have chosen to purchase our choice of quality items that can do double duty or be used for a long period of time. We prefer to not fall victim to the mentality that we need multitudes of products.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in putting together this room? Our biggest challenge was finding items that were designed well, not overly baby themed, and were in budget. Until finding this crib set on sale my mother and I were planning on making the bedding. My mother did make the curtains (per my design) so that we could see the Atlanta skyline above them. My Mom also made the hamper liner, pillows, teddy bear and blanket. I made the name art and mobile.

The second challenge was that both my husband and I are in design fields. We often have very different design ideas when it comes to home decor and furnishings. The original vision for the room was mine and my husband soon saw the vision too.

The third major challenge was re-organizing our two bedroom condo. Prior to becoming a nursery this room was 1/2 guestroom and 1/2 my husband's home office. He also used the closet as our entire condo possesses only two closets and let me tell you they are small! The ottoman in the nursery as well as the futon have extra storage within. Adding the futon to the nursery was a must to make our condo more grandparent/guest friendly.

Awesome, awesome room!

(I must say, we have eerily similar taste -- we bought the same Amy Coe rocker for our future nursery, we're going to do "pool" blue walls with brown/red/white accents and I almost bought that bedding set, too.)

My favorite part, though, is your homemade name artwork. Love it!

Pbona - the color is "open seas" by Sherwin Williams but we had it color matched and used Olympia's low VOC paint that is available at Lowes. It is brighter on the walls than it looked in the swatch but I love how it turned out.

Wow, you have always had an amazing eye for bringing out the uniquely beautiful way of things. The room is so lovely and I am so happy for you and your hubby. Having a baby, of which I am a bit partial to boys, is so fantastically amazing. He is going to love his new mommy and daddy oh....and the room too. Congrats and well done. :)

jackied302- for the art work I used craft paper boxes I purchased at Michael's. To give it more dimension I used both the lids and bases. The signage images I saved off flickr.com. I did resize and crop the images in photoshop. I painted the boxes brown to match our decor and used mod podge to adhere the images to the boxes. I also added three coats of mod podge on top of the images and paint to act as a epoxy/sealant. I wanted to use all non-toxic materials so real sealant/epoxy was out of the question.

The buffalo is actually from a gift shop at Cedar Point MANY years ago.

I do love the room, it looks so peaceful and cool. I would, however, probably have chosen a "T" that was not a recognizable brand logo. Especially that of a petroleum company.
