Tip for Living Small with Kids: Keep it simple! Spaces that are as safe and minimal as possible with small children maintains your sanity and reduces the need to tell your child ‘no, don’t touch!’ ten thousand times a day. We have eliminated most things that can break easily or are considered untouchable so that our son can explore his home as freely as possible.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in putting together this room? At the moment Bryce’s room also serves as the guest bedroom for the many family and friends that come to visit, but we also envision it as a space that he will eventually grow into seamlessly once he outgrows the need for a crib/toddler bed so we wanted to make it both kid-friendly and guest-friendly. We have used a soft blue paint color to unify the various elements and furnishings of the space and create a focus for the room. Utilizing simple box shelves as nightstands, the paint frames the queen size bed and becomes the background color within each box shelf and represents the sky blue behind the giraffe decal appliqués that add an element of fun to the space. Keeping the furniture and design elements low makes it all easily accessible for our little one. To one side of the bed hangs a hoop mobile that was made for us as a baby shower present before Bryce was born.
Opposite the bed wall is the entrance to the room and Bryce’s sleeping/changing area. Another box shelf is mounted above his crib to keep bedtime stories within easy reach. The same blue sky paint is the background color of this box shelf and extends around the corner to capture three photographs entitled Red, Yellow and Blue that also hang above the crib. The painting sitting on top of the box shelf was done by Bryce’s mother when she was a child in the hopes of fostering an additional artistic influence within the room.

@Jilllsuz: try Blikgraphics.com for the decals. I think it may be under the "Threadless" graphics section. I have something very similar in my son's room.

The giraffe decals are from:

The side tables are box shelves by Crate and Barrell from a few summer seasons ago. Not sure if they still have them in their current product line.
