Smaller Cooler 2009: Jake & Pete's Super Small Space

thumbs up

Whose Room is This? : Jake, 8 and Pete, 6
Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Family: Jake, Pete, sister Betsy, 4, sister Rosie, 2, Mom Beth, Dad and two dogs
Room Size: 90 square feet
Division: Big Kid

Tip for Living Small with Kids: You have to stay organized, and reduce the clutter where ever, and whenever you can! I know it sounds so cliche, but there has to be a place for everything and they should be able to put everything in it's place. There stuff should definately be accessible to them, but they should also know where it belongs when they're done with it.

Give Jake, Pete and their family a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in putting together this room? Our boys share a room. They recently had to take the smallest of the two extra bedrooms because our youngest daughter went from a crib to a big girl bed. This meant that our two girls (one who has special needs and CANNOT sleep in a top bunk)needed seperate twin beds, and they just wouldn't fit in the smaller room. So, the boys were happy to move, but wanted a desk.

At first, we weren't sure how to pull this off in such a small space. The room is 9.5 feet x 9.5 feet! I wasn't really sure how any furniture other than the bed would fit. One night, I got the idea to float a desk on the wall under the window, and extend it into the dead space at the foot of their bunks and on the side of their wardrobe. Luckily, my husband, Jake, is super handy. It took one afternoon, and now they have their desk (plus a couple of shelves). To make it more interesting, we made it bar height so they can day dream out the window.

My regular resources are Odeedoh, Apartment Therapy, Better Homes & Gardens, and various design blogs. I am also loving how Target has teamed with top designers to make great desihn more accessible for everyone. Most of the time though, necessity is, indeed, the mother of invention. Hooks for back packs from Anthroplogie, magnet strips for artwork and pictures from Ikea, a big tub for wooden blocks, personal bookshelves and lamps for each boy... these are a few things that keep clutter under control, and look cool in the process!

hi- i'm new here, but i've been reading ohdeedoh for a while- and i just love this room!
The car headlights are adorable, the floating desk and books are smart and practical, and the curtains are really great with your color scheme.
I especially love the way you put a lamp and bookshelf near each bed. it makes the room feel like it's giving a personal space to each kid.
Great job!

this one is my favorite so far. Very cute. I love the book racks and reading lamps along side the beds. I'm going to steal that idea when we switch my son to a twin bed next month.

Great use of space. My two older kids share as well and I am working on figuring out a bunk bed configuration. This is really useful and well done--an inspiration. Thanks for sharing!

I just love it. Colorful, inspiring, creative. Sort of makes me want a boy in our little house full of pink, sparkles and girls.

the car grill is on old austin mini cooper front end. my in-laws own an automotive shop and my father-in-law is a mini cooper nut. jake figured out a good way to mount it on the wall safely and voila!

the armoire is a hand-me-down from my sweet cousion's old bedroom set. it was pickled a sage green color...4 coats of glossy orange paint later (some new hardware), and it looks sha-weet!

Kids rooms can sometimes look too "designed" and I always wonder what those kids feel like living in a room without personality.

This room is the opposite of that! You can really feel your boys' personality shining through. It's neat but not fussy. Designed but not precious. Certainly a boys room, but not stereotypical. I love the desk/workspace under the window! Definitely my favorite so far.

bedside book racks are from pottery barn kids. a little pricey for my budget, but WELL worth it. and VERY easy to hang.

Love the room! Love the Mini Cooper grill, love the amazing orange armoire. I looked at a house with a third bedroom about this size recently, and I couldn't imagine how it could be used as a bedroom (it was being used as an office.) You did an amazing job with such a tiny space.
