thumbs up
Name/Age: Judah, 6 Months
Location: Mandan, North Dakota
Family: Judah, Katie, Dad and Lucy the Dog
Room Size: 76 square feet
Division: Baby
Tip for Living Small with Kids: Organization is key. Normally this isn't my strong suit. But with the explosion of baby items and toys, I could hardly handle the mess anymore. I have purchased several tubs to store too-small clothes in, a cute tote from Target to store and tote about baby toys, plastic color coded baskets for the closet to separate our things from the baby's. These rather easy steps go a long way in a small space.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in putting together this room? For us, our challenge was cost. A first child brings many expenses with it. We are both artists/designers, and we thoroughly enjoy house projects. So it was no skin off our back to be neck deep in projects until our little guy came.
Our best resources were thrift stores, the internet, and our own 2 (or rather 4) hands. We found our beautiful mid-century-modern dresser-gone-changing-table at a thrift store for $55, sanded it down, and refinished it to go along with our crib (and sewed the coordinating changing pad cover for on top). We commissioned my father to build us our "Case Crib" wannabe crib. He finished it with details we love: built in drawers to store toys down low for our little one, and little moon details on each end piece (our last name is Moon). I picked up our rocking chair for $12 at a thrift store as well, refinished the wooden arms/legs, and sewed a cover for it (with Amy Butler fabric).
I made the mobile from an embroidery hoop, ribbon, and foam I cut into woodland shapes. I found our bedding online on Craigslist for an incredible deal—Robin Motif by Dwell. It sets the woodland/tree tone for the room as it is covered in leaves. Judah's Nana made the coordinating quilt draped over the end. Behind the crib, on the wall, we have painted a tree (with matching leaves to the bedding) to create a family tree with baby pictures (pictures go back to our baby's great-grandparents). We thought this would be a fun way to showcase family resemblance to our child, as well as to honor those we love (all photos are labeled with names and birthdates.). The frames also came from a thrift store (average price was 60 cents) and we painted them all white to match (they are air-nailed to the wall for safety). My husband made the owl clock on the wall. The art piece on the wall is a spread from a book I have been illustrating. The pregnancy pictures of me were taken by my husband. We made the curtains, footstool, and finally, the tree-like hanging lamp and the sheep skin rug were Ikea purchases. And other small details include owls and other stuffed animals.
We have filled Judah's room with great love, care, thought, and time.

Love the room! Love the colors, love the style, and I'm terribly jealous of your furniture. That's a gorgeous crib your father made, I love the dresser/changing table, and I'm so jealous of your rocker. And that's one cute baby, too. ;)

It's lovely! Great job.
Just a piece of advice from a parent who's been there: in about 6 months, your kid is going to start pulling down those photos, possibly dislodging the nails you used to hang them. This happened to us -- one morning I woke my daughter and found her chewing on a nail (but at least the glass frame hadn't broken also). Once the baby stands independently, you might want to remove the lowest row of photos.

Oh. I see now that they're air nailed for safety. You're a way better parent than I am. :-)

I had the same thought as Lisa in having to remove the lower row as Judah grows. I love the personalized nursery and the great name you chose for your son.

I love the color and the details in the room--beautiful. Did you make the diaper holder that attaches to the changing pad? What a great idea. I have never seen something like that before.

Hi, lovely room!!! I love the owl clock, can you tell me where you found it?
thanks so much.

Thank you for all the great comments. Those with the clock questions: my husband actually made me the clock for my birthday last year (great surprise). It was inspired by an Urban Outfitters clock that is now discontinued (hence he built it more me).

Ok. The paint are two Sherwin Williams color swatches. The main room color is Melange Green, and the tree is painted in Spring Time Green. We had Lowes match the swatches (they have the coordinates from S.W. preset in their computers already) as our research showed Valspar was rated best for fade-resistant paint.

Oh! And yes, I made the changing pad cover/diaper holder. I was inspired by an Amy Butler pattern (I had to come up with my own pattern for the changing pad though).
