Survey: A Stylish and Comfortable Rocker?

june18rocker.jpg
Our cousins with a 4-month old have yet to find the perfect rocker. Comfort is top priority. They also want a rocker that feels like "something your grandmother would have used." Note the emphasis on your grandmother, not ours, as our beloved grandparents favored the plastic-coated upholstery look. Can you help our cousins pick a great rocker, and change our family's decor tradition? We've rounded up a few rocker choices and hope you will vote on your favorite - or suggest something else. Survey below the jump...

I'd like to see reviews on the new Poang rocker at Ikea. I sat in one recently, and it seemed comfortable, but the rock seemed kind of weird. It felt like it might rock better with more upper body weight (or if you were holding a baby)?

The thing I like about it is the style and the fact that it was tall enough to lean your head back. I think that's important so you can snooze.

OH, and the price, of course.

the nurseryworks storytime rocker!!!! we could not live without this and no one would be getting any sleep.

plus nurseryworks products are a green safe--not just stylish

they aren't cheap--we were able to get ours on sale, but it really was worth every penny.

I got the Poang rocker. Unfortunately I miscarried before I had a chance to really test it out. What I can say about it is this....it rocks well on solid surface floors (ie hardwood or tile) but not as well on carpeting...since I am short and the chair is quite deep, I was just able to reach the floor so I would have probably eventually gotten the ottoman to go along with it. Being really deep it is quite comfy (especially with the lambswool-like cushion) but I suspect it may be a bit difficult to get out of if you were holding a sleeping baby unless you are tall. That being said, I still love it.

Poang chairs in general are quite difficult to get out of especially if you're short without using the arm rests and I would imagine with a baby in your arms it would be near impossible.

After 18 months of serious searching, the Monte Luca glider ended up being the clear winner for me as the best modern rocker out there, upholstered or not. After sitting in it for 5 minutes, my research was affirmed and I purchased one on the spot from Posh Baby in Portland, Oregon. Seriously the best thing ever! The glide is smooth and not too fast, the arms are the perfect height/angle and the back is tall enough to rest your head on. Each comes with a stylish, lumbar accent pillow, too. I saved up for a bit because it's a little pricey, but there is no sales tax in Portland, so shipping costs were basically canceled out. This is a chair I would gladly put out in my modern living room well after the child is grown. Great shop, too! http://bit.ly/k78Nm

Forget about a rocking chair. The Monte Luca Glider is definitely the most comfortable chair around! Plus it will easily transition into another room in your home when its time.

So sorry about your loss undomestic. :-(

They are all very stylish but also quite modern. I don't know...none of them could pass for something my "Grandmother would have used".

You can't go wrong with a basic Jenny Lind type Rocker. Especially if you paint it a bright cheerful color.

I'm considering this one

Not exactly granny style either but I need something with a smaller footprint to replace my kind of ugly but insanely comfortable glider, now that my son is a bit older and we use it for reading books instead of nursing. I also want something cheap. I didn't know Ikea had a rocking poang so I'll definitely check that out.

For nursing I really liked having a high back so I could fall asleep and padded arms for comfort. I think in that early baby stage comfort trumps style. I spent far more hours sitting in the rocker, than looking at it.

I have seen this Marshmallow glider on Costco's web site and Babies R Us and it seems modern and cute but not sure how comfortable it is:

I have a horrible ugly grandma glider I got free from my grandma. It has a horrible plaid cover and the wood is a very weird stain but it does the job.

I got a more traditional, but unbelieveably comfortable rocker from the Land of Nod. Although we still have 5wks until our little one is here I have been sitting in it at least once or twice a day. It looks beautiful and we bought the slipcover so that when there are spills and spit-ups we can toss it in the washing machine.
I wanted something that I could use in any room in my house.

I often nursed in my rocker and used a Boppy nursing pillow, so my rocker had to accommodate the width of the Boppy--I had a no-name rocker, traditional style. A LOT of rockers are wide but not wide enough.
Something to think about for new moms...

storytime rocker from nurseryworks. Do NOT pay full price, they are always on sale somewhere for 40%off with free shipping. Don't get the micro-terry if you have pets. It holds hair like glue.

I would have loved these rockers but ended up, for financial reasons, getting the bentwood rocking chair from Target (http://www.target.com/Bentwood-Rocking-Chair-White/dp/B00133BEVW/sr=1-16/qid=1245419699/ref=sr_1_16/178-1306696-3729340?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3Abentwood&page=1). It is stylish and super comfortable. I would recommend it to anyone.

We have a monte design rocker, and it is by far the best one on the market. It was so worth the splurge! Save on the crib, and splurge on a quality chair.

My grandmother, a simple miller's wife in a village, had custom architect-designed furniture in the 1930's. It was beautiful avant-garde Bauhaus-style stuff... (the architect was her brother-in-law :-))

As I post this, I am sitting in the amazing rocking chair we got for our son -- it is so stunning and well-designed, it sits in our living room -- we were never able to relegate it to the nursery.

The rocker?

The Moderno rocker, designed in 1959/60 by the Finn Yrjö Kukkkapuro.

It is actually the rocking chair in the Moderno line -- so if you REALLY like it, you can always order matching dining chairs! :-)

Here it is:
http://www.lepoproduct.fi/pics/tuotteet/L66.pdf

It is padded, upholstered and very well proportioned for comfort (nice and high, good seat depth and width...)

Babygeared and Sparkability used to offer it, but no longer do; perhaps due to the supposed 12 week wait. Being in Canada, with no retailers, I ordered it direct from the manufacturer (which you can probably now do since no one seems to be selling it in the U.S.). I think the price of the rocker was approximately 400-600 Euros shipping, depending on the fabric selected (this was 2 1/2 years ago).

I actually had them use a Designers Guild fabric, so paid somewhat more (but still much less than retail). I think the shipping quote I got for Canada was something in the order of $350. Not bad. (don't forget to factor in duties and/or taxes).

Hands-down it is the best comfortable rocker on the market that outlives the baby stage. It does not look like "baby furniture". You will not be hiding it away in the basement, or trying to sell it on Craigslist because you will be using it for many years to come.

Just to clarify -- the cost was 400-600 Euros, depending on fabric, plus the cost of shipping. At the time, shipping was around $350 Cdn (but shipping costs since then have come down, and so will probably be less).
