We were terrible. We would shove any and everything we could under our bed as a place to put things "away." When it finally came time for us to move out of our apartment, we were shocked to see all of the lone socks, magazines, dust bunnies, books and shoes that resurfaced. Since then, we vowed never to store items under our bed again.
Yet, under the bed can be such an untapped storage area. We're tempted to begin using it again in our son's room. We all need somewhere to store our sweaters, shoes, toys, books, after all --- especially if we're short on places to put them.
Do you store items under your child's bed? What do you use to pack your items? Do you find it hard or easy to keep it tidy and organized?

Ok, I actually plan on having underbed storage built into my child's bed. It's something I *always* had (excepting when I had my daybed and the trundle was stored under there) and right now we have extra blankets and off-season clothing stored under our bed. It's the only way to maximize space without going insane for the clutter.

We have plastic storage bins under the crib. These are the "too small" bins for each kid and an extra "too big" bin for one (the other "too big" resides in the closet). Three fit so perfectly under the crib that there is not any way for things to get cluttered or messy under there. Once they are full, we whisk them to the basement (or off to a friend for hand-me-downs) and bring up another to be filled. I also really like the bins we use because they are shallow enough that things don't tend to get lost. They are similar to this one (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10401051) if not them exactly.
My husband also built my daughter a great toddler bed that has a dresser underneath ... or will once her finishes the drawers. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jesser80/3422441967/ Since we're outgrowing our house and we're planning to have our kids share a room, this under-bed dresser will be awesome for saving us space.

I love love love using under beds for storage until my husband whose mother is a feng shui consultant said it was "bad fung shui" to have stuff under the bed. ARRGH!!!

I agree about it being bad feng shui...not that I know anything about feng shui, but I prefer the idea of a clean space under the bed. That said, my son sleeps on a captain's bed from Ikea (not available anymore, but I think it was a Malm?), which, as beautiful as it is not, is very functional. Also, I store all our linens under my bed in gigantic Ziploc bags! (which are hidden by a bedskirt.) I am still holding strong with the baby's crib, though, and there's nothing under there yet. Someday I hope to have more closet space for things I can't toss, like clothes and sheets, so that I can keep those spaces under the beds free to be inhabited by dust bunnies.
