Two Surveys: Kids and Chores

2008-09-03-chores.jpg

Last week we talked about instilling the value of housework in kids and reports of diminishing chore-doing by this generation and we wanted to know more about how it works in your family. At what age do you expect your kids to start helping with housework? And how much work do you "wring" out of them?

my 3 yr old helps sort laundry, cleans up toys, helps empty the dishwasher, and takes recycling out to the bin in the garage. It doesn't save me that much time, but it is teaching him the value of work.

Exactly what driftandfloat said.
I want my boys to respect their home and part of that is helping care and maintain it.
Plus, when they are older I want them to be able to take care of themselves.
My husband still believes in what I call "The Laundry Fairy".

Kids at this age, mine are 4 and 19mos, love to help, so I am trying to make it a habit before they realize that it's really not all that fun.
19 month old loves to put things in the garbage, but only garbage, never anything that shouldn't be there.

My 7-year-old loves to clean the toilet (!) My two year old is great at sweeping under the table with a hand broom. Both are able to take clothes out of the dryer.

My son is only two so I don't expect anything of him, but he loves to help and when it's convenient I grab my chance. The best time was when we'd had dinner and there was rice all over the floor. I got the hoover out to start hoovering but he kept trying to grab it from me, so I gave it to him, and he managed to hoover every bit of rice on the floor while I loaded the dishwasher, wiped the table and other surfaces! He got rewarded with a cup of raisins which he absolutely loved. He also likes to put things in the garbage for me, do some dusting (i give him a clean dry cloth and ask him to whipe this and that), and to call his daddy for tea :)
