Many coffee tables aren't that child-friendly, and we wanted to keep plenty of open space for our little one to crawl around in so we didn't bother with a coffee table. But sometimes we still need a place to put down a cup of coffee or tea or a snack. A tea table with folding legs does the trick.
My mother-in-law sent ours from Korea, but you can find them at large Korean supermarkets as well. The tables are light, inexpensive and it's a great space saver because you can just take it out when you need it.
It's also the perfect height for a baby once he or she is sitting up so it could also be used for coloring or crafts later on.
We found one online here.
Haha. I just had a funny thought. (I also ditched my coffee table and put it in storage three years ago.) I may just move our Thomas train table and use that as a coffee table in the living room! I could use Cranky the Crane to help load sugar cubes from coal cars.

You're a genius. Wish I had thought of that years ago.

Funny... I was just about to buy a coffee table for our Family Room (where we never had one before). I thought the open space would be a bonus for my 2-year old, but it turns out he really likes to stand at a table and play. Any suggestions for an inexpensive, child-friendly table with storage underneath?? (I've been looking at a few tables at IKEA that might work).

I wish I knew about this 2 months ago. We ended up getting a slat bench coffee table that has screw off legs.

wow! very cool to see korean tea tables get good press! I remember growing up with one that had silver cranes and tigers on them and vowed never to have one in my future, proper, "American" home. These all-wood versions are a nice compromise :)
