The SIGG Bottle / BPA Controversy

082609siggvskk1.jpgAs many parents may know, SIGG recently went public saying that all of their bottles are completely BPA (Bisphenol A) free. With a new "EcoCare" powder-based, co-polyester coating publicized, the uproar comes from the BIG SIGG question: what did the aluminum bottles contain before?

Well, the answer is that all SIGG bottles produced prior to August '08, actually do contain BPA. The latest update and development is that SIGG will replace your old bottles for free. Will you take SIGG up on the offer or go an entirely different route?

More on environmental, health and safety information regarding BPA here.

The Z Recommends website has a review of the new liner - apparently it may chip, leaving a jagged edge. Seems like plain stainless (Kleen Kanteen) is the way to go. Does anyone know if the old SIGG bottles can be recycled with aluminum cans?

If I were a mean person, I'd let loose some Sigg smug on a certain self-righteous mom who threw a hissy about their kid being offered a shared sip (gasp!) from a plastic bottle (gasp!) by a well-intentioned 3 year old trying to share on the playground (the horror!), then lectured me on plastics.

Seriously.

1) It's probably not the end of the world even if I didn't nicely intervene in time to introduce a caveat to lessons in sharing: "That's nice of you to share...but let's all drink out of our own bottles..."

2) Unknown to her: the plastic bottle was a BPA-free plastic made of corn remnants.

Instead, may she find the safest water bottle in the world; Can't wait to see the inevitable new score in action.

I have to wonder, however, is it really that green to chuck out -- or recycle -- all of these "old" bottles? Sunlight will rapidly breakdown the chemical outbreathing of many plastics and the older bottles are likely "adult safe." (OK, avoid if you're pregnant, etc).

I just wrote sigg a letter to ask them how/if they will replace my kids' bottles. Lets see how fast and what kind of reply I get.

I think it is extremely important to note that the old liners never leached bpa. Also, being completely left out of this story is the fact that many of the lower-end aluminum bottles tested from pottery barn, the container store, and old navy not only contained bpa, but also leached bpa. As far as I know they are still being sold.

Personally, I am just not comfortable drinking out of stainless steel.

I have two old Sigg bottles from the mid-90s that I'm going to continue to use.

These two articles say that the trace amounts of BPA contained in the old Siggs didn't leach.

I also think it is important to note that the old bottles supposedly don't leach BPA. I will be requesting replacements however. Kind of a principle thing as Sigg tried to indicate previously that their bottles were BPA-free (not that they said that, but sort of lying by omission).

I have been concerned about the cheap bottle I purchased at Target and think I will recycle that. I've been trying to get pregnant with number two for two years and don't need any additional issues tripping me up.

Hi everyone -

I received a letter back from the CEO - pretty much the same form letter that others on the net have received. It says that its a voluntary exchange program vs a recall, so they will exchange my bottles if i pay for the mailing in, then they will pay to mail them back. He also mentions the same that CrewJulie above says - the old bottles are not leaching BPA.

I think that that is pretty fair.
