Activities rugs are a cute idea but years ago I discovered with my 4 year old cousin that a big roll of masking tape works great too. He and I "built" roads through out the entire house by using plain wide masking tape. We had an elaborate road system set up for all his Hot Wheels... far more creative for the little ones. His parents told me he talked about it for weeks afterwards. The tape didn't cause any damage to the carpet when I pulled it up either.
