I'd like to paint the top of a great metal desk I have with chalkboard paint (the desk is great, the top is not, it's brown and scratched while the rest of the desk is grey). Anyone know if you can paint metal, and if so, how?

I'm going to be doing a couple of chalkboard walls soon, using Martha's custom color recipe.

Yes, you can paint on metal! Just rough up the surface a bit with sandpaper, and then go to it. (Someone correct me if there's more to it than that!)

Oh, Eva, I hope you send us photos of the before and after on that project! Please do! I love to see DIY in action. Adrienne and Amy, I LOVE the Martha Stewart Calender - what a great way to keep a family schedule. And if you put magnetic paint underneath, you could post invites, etc on the days. Amy, we need photos from you as well if you put Martha's wall into action!

has anybody used the chalk wall dots? I have colored dots by them and love them, wondering if/how the chalk dots work . . . do your kids stay on the dot or get chalk all over the wall thats behind it too?

When Jim and his uncle were restoring an antique tractor, they repainted metal.

They sanded off the paint and rust to get a clean, even metal surface. They applied a couple coats of primer for metals (ask your local hardware store or look in the might Pocket Ref for recommendations). The finished it with a couple coats of appropriate paint (again, check with the hardware people).

I don't know how important multicoating would be as your desk will not be plowing any fields, but their end product was gorgeous.
