apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Lilliput Play Homes

We considered the entire garage our own playhouse growing up, but if buying or building a dedicated playhouse for your kids in on your list for the spring you'll certainly find plenty of inspiration at Lilliput Play Homes. (And apartment dwellers, we can still fantasize, right?)

Lilliput Play Homes is a 20-year-old family-run business based in Pennsylvania. They offer 13 play structures from cottage-style homes to larger, grander ones. And not just houses - they have a fire house, market, castle, movie theater and clubhouse. The structures are sent in 10-20 panels and require only basic handyman skills and tools to put together.

For fear that you'll stop reading we won't tell you the cost (and they vary greatly), but for true DIY'ers you can also purchase plans to build these yourself as well as some parts (windows, shutters, etc.). Regardless, we had great fun browsing Lilliput Play Homes' website and think you will too.

I always wanted one of these little playhouses. When I was little a girl down the street had a little chalet. It was pink and so sweet. Now that I have little girls of my own what does my husband build....a tree house. A girl can still dream.

Holy cow! Yes, they are completely gorgeous, but the prices are absurd! I honestly can't imagine how rich you have to be to get your kid a $7,000 playhouse. That just seems so wasteful to me.

Tasteless...especially while watching Haiti.

Wow; $7,000 could feed a lot of people and help keep them alive. Or your kids could have a mini-house outside of the real house! 50,000 people are dead in Haiti and what are the other things in the news? Overpriced playhouses and what the 'big stars' are getting in their stupid 'gift bags' at whatever awards show. Sad.

what happened to the good-o cardboard box & blanket fort??? what happened to imaginary castles??

oh! i see, a $7000 fancy play house.

Obviously the people who buy these playhouses have a lot of disposable income. When was the last time you wrote a check that large? Hmmm.

The sad thing is that you could hire someone local to do the same for much, much, much less.

Well those playhouses were made and purchased before Haiti even happened so I'm not really sure what that's got to do with anything. But, I will say, some of the custom houses that were commissioned by wealthy people for their children were kind of stomach turning. There was one that had 6 rooms and was an exact replica of the owner's modern home. A child does not need a 6 room playhouse, even if the parents can afford it.

The ones that were commissioned for hospitals or special needs classes were very nice, however.

This website can be inspirational, don't have to spend all that money in a playhouse of course, but if I ever consider putting one in the garden, sure will visit it again for ideas.

Let the haters hate.

Those are gorgeous, and if I had the kids, I'd buy one.

Well, elvedon, no one is hating anything. The playhouses are very nice-looking and pretty.

Let's say I do have the cash on hand to buy one. Why should I? Or should I do something else? Just as you would buy one of those playhouses, I would not; I can think of other things to do with the cash. Right now I'd rather donate some cash to build a play structure at my neighborhood park.

I don't see why these personal taste/decision discussions always end with someone implying we're haters. Seriously.

I'm working on my own business developing play houses and structures and TRUST me... It may seem like a lot of $$$, but with quality craftsmanship along with cost of materials, $7000 isn't a lot.... It seems like an excessive amount to pay for play houses of this type, but a lot of people will pay this type of money - it's for their kids!

The comments were half about the timing of placing the piece (directed at ohdeedoh) and half about the insanity of spending this kind of money on a playhouse.

What can I say....can I take out a mortgage on this house ? :)
