We were in need of a great gift idea that met the following criteria: something unique and personalized, homemade but not too difficult for us to put together, gender neutral, works for a wide range of ages, and wouldn't cost too much. It wasn't easy but Sally of Shim + Sons provided the answer.

Sally created these craft toolboxes chock full of goodies. This particular one for a lucky birthday girl includes tape, a piggy pencil sharpener, colored pencils, origami paper, plain labels, alphabet stickers, a stapler, mini hole punch, colored paper clips, glue sticks, scissors, fruit erasers, and notebooks and envelopes.
We're going to create something similar for the boys and girls on our holiday list and one trip to a well-stocked local store should be all we need to assemble the components. Some customized gift tags and pretty ribbon gets us to the finish line. For more inspiration, read Sally's post here.
(Thanks, Sally!)
This is such a cute idea. also, as a parent, I would really appreciate this gift since it doesn't add to clutter and is an "outside the box" kind of gift. I did a similar ting for my nephew for Christmas, but with play dough (homemade from the recipe on this site) and included a small rolling pin, cookie cutters, etc. It was very economical.

Reminds me of Caboodles. Takes me back to middle school days!

My mom makes cards and has a plethora of these with markers, stamps, and other little tidbits. If I need to borrow anything she can fill one with the materials I need. They're fantastic. She buys pretty tackle boxes from the craft stores.

Yes! We have always used tackle boxes for craft supplies! One for sewing stuff, one for scrapbooking stuff, one for paints and brushes, and one with lidded compartments for beads.

I made one of these up for my neice when she was five and personalized it with stickers. It was full of all sorts of crafting things, she loved it! Every year since then I give her a gift bag full of craft supplies for her kit at Christmas. She's 9 now. We also have a long standing joke about all the pipecleaners, so every year I get her a package of those for in her stocking too. : )
