Modern Chairs, Dollhouse Twist

2007.06.01.nursery.minifurniture.jpg

So what is in your kid's doll house? While the translation is iffy, the execution is stellar on these 1/12 reproductions of great moments in modern furniture. The detail is astonishing - from the moving parts of the recliner to the removable cushions on the Barcelona chair, each piece is a miniature work of art. Check out the rest, below.

We bet some of these look familiar! It is hard to believe that these are all miniature versions of the real thing.

Oh, who are we trying to kid? We want these to play with ourselves!

All the sets can be found here, and range in price from about 4,500 yen to 6,000 yen. Maybe it is time to upgrade Barbie's dream house from Pinktacular and Plastic to Hot MidCentury Modern.

You can often buy either the sets or some of the individual chairs on eBay, if you're okay with shipping from Hong Kong.

Maybe it is time to upgrade Barbie's dream house from Pinktacular and Plastic to Hot MidCentury Modern.

Barbie's Dream House is scaled 1:6, while these chairs are 1:12, so she'll need to buy the much pricier modern chairs sold in museum shops. Those are closer to her size.

Quickie guide to dollhouse scales:

Barbie, GI Joe, Bratz, and anyone about their size = 1:6
Dollhouses you see in dollhouse shops, also Ryan's Room and similar educational houses = usually roughly 1:12
The splendidly "hollywood Regency" Petite Princess furniture you or your mother had = 1:18
The tin litho dollhouse your mother got in the 1950s = anywhere from 1:16 to 1:24, depending on the house
Your old wooden Fisher Price people and your new Playmobil = roughly 1:24
Those big LGB train sets that people run in their gardens = roughly 1:24
Your Dad's O-gauge Lionel = approximately 1:48
The Halloween and Christmas villages in every store = around 1:48, maybe 1:43.5

So you can get a set for about $40? That sounds like a great deal to me, too good to be true?

I forgot to add - some of the chairs are available as singles eg Wassily chair, that aren't in the sets.

Wende, oh keeper of wonderful statistics....

I can't be the only one wondering why in the world you just happened to have all the info on dollhouse scales.

Is there an amazing heirloom doll house parked next to your finance books?

I can't be the only one wondering why in the world you just happened to have all the info on dollhouse scales.

'Cause I erratically build dollhouses as a hands-on hobby that uses the non-analytical parts of my brain. The "erratic" parts implicate both my skills and my progress.

Is there an amazing heirloom doll house parked next to your finance books?

Not in the massive-Victorian-tons-of-accurate-detail sense. My father did build very stylized MCM houses for me when I was a tot, though -- including this one. (Photos are outdated; since moving to Arizona, the house has acquired a garden and a very Scottsdale kitchen.)

To get back on topic... I had delicate furniture and tiny accessories in for-play houses by the time I was six, so with the right kid, this is all very accessible. (Much depends on having the right kid for the job. Always.)

For those interested in a retailer with a site in english:

I did a post on AT:Chicago in April on similar (or possibly the same?) chairs. They are sold online from a local Chicago shop called Rotofugi.

Here is a link to the post.

Wende, you are fabulous!

Gekko, There are 2 Kristins at AT - I am the Canadian one that writes at AT:Nursery, and the other Kristin is the Parisienne who posts gorgeous stuff like this http://tinyurl.com/36vpc5 over at AT:NY and makes us all want to jump on planes and go to Europe and buy silver teapots and sugar tongs.

I buy these on Ebay from the Toy Paradise Store. There are others who sell them, but I have been very happy with this Ebay store. Also some sellers have them to sell individually, but it is "cheaper" to buy by the set.

I am looking for a mid-century style dollhouse. Any thoughts? Thanks.
