Roundup: DIY Play Kitchens

roundup-diy-kitchens.jpgOkay, by now you get it: we really love homemade play kitchens. Yesterday's post about Neva's sweet kitchen made from recycled cupboards inspired us to round up a handful of our favorite DIY posts. Made of everything from tablecloths to cardboard to Ikea components, these remind us that you don't have to have a big budget to get wonderful results...

What about other items? Has anyone hacked a different room or function for children? A toolbench or a mini sofa and coffee table? How about a tiny classroom or doctor's office? The kitchens are beautiful, and I'm wondering how far we could all take this?

I'd love to see a DIY BBQ grill. The ones I've seen in stores are really cute (esp for a boy whose Daddy loves to grill), but they're too expensive.

i bought the plans and tried to make that cardboard one. i think you have to be some sort of cardboard genius because three weeks, several scratches to my wood floor, and several mangled pieces of cardboard later i gave up. there is a cute one at costco and the $100 is so worth the non aggravation. i guess i am just not a good DIY'er

IKEA has just come out with a very nice play kitchen that has "electric" burners that glow red with the flick of a switch, a microwave, a sink and an oven. You can get just the base ($99) if you don't want the microwave and shelf unit on top. The whole thing is $140, which is more than a hundred dollars cheaper than a very similar one I just saw in a catalog.

They also have wonderful little dishes, flatware, and cookware sets that are well made and inexpensive.
