We're living in smaller apartments and homes with children and we're also beginning to drive smaller cars (those of us who have cars anyway) which can make fitting in car seats, especially for multiple children, more difficult. Combi, already known for bringing some style to the car seat realm, has designed the Coccoro specifically aimed at owners of smaller, compact, more fuel efficient cars.

Designed to be either rear or front facing, Combi says up to three Coccoros can be used together in the back seat of most compact cars or two on the sides with room for an adult to sit in between them. Another feature we really like is the infant insert ("Mommy's Lap" insert) to give young and small babies a snug fit. At 11 lbs., the Coccoro is several pounds lighter than most comparable car seats which smaller (in our case, wimpier) parents will appreciate and those of us who don't own cars and lug it back and forth from the apartment to rentals or Zipcars.

The simple, modern design answers a lot of design-conscious parents' prayers and we love that there are seven colors to choose from: cherry pie, cool mint, carrot cake, key lime, strawberry shake, chestnut, and hazelnut. The cost? $200. The Combi website says they will be available in Feb. 2009, but they're still listed as pre-orders. Find out more here and purchase here.
Oh wow, these would have been PERFECT when my triplets were infants! Maybe I wouldn't have had to buy a minivan! (Yeah, right...)

I didn't see anything saying what size child it would fit. We got a Combi bucket seat for our daughter, and she outgrew it by the time she turned 3 months old! Lame! I would love a car seat with a smaller footprint than normal, but I would need it to actually hold my child, too! lol. Also, I understand that this seat is probably narrower to fit 3 across, but I wonder how it compares to standard car seats in how much front to back room it takes up when rear facing. We have reasonably big cars and normal car seats (Outback and Taurus, First Years True Fit and Britax Boulevard), and we literally could not have 2 rear facing seats in the car at once, because they push the seats too far forward, and we're too tall to drive like that (sitting in the passenger seat is unpleasant enough, but driving like that would be dangerous!). We only have one baby now, but this factor alone has convinced us that we might need a minivan or SUV if we have another anytime soon. I would love to find a reasonable solution other than that, though, so I hope these Combi seats turn out to be the real deal.

hyzen, check out the Combi website. They have some actual stats on the seats. Not a lot, though. But it should definitely fit a kid longer than the infant seat. In theory!

I can never say enough good things about our Maxi-Cosi Priori. It fits great in my Subaru Impreza.

It says up to 40 lbs... but I'd have to see it to believe it.

My mom bought us a Combi Coccoro for our daughter. As soon as I opened the box and got a huge whiff of the fire retarding chemicals they douse the polyurethane seat cover in I knew it was going right back in the box and back to the store it came from (and hopefully into some unknown dimension where it couldn't do anyone any harm ever again). So gross and harmful to baby's health. I actually developed a sore throat and congested sinuses from contact with this car seat. I would never put an infant in something this toxic. It looks super cute and it is great that it can fit in smaller cars but the risk to baby's well-being just isn't worth it.
