Two year old Sophia looks like she's heading off for an archaeological dig. She's actually on a week long camping trip (in a tent) at Cranberry Lake, a State campsite, in the Adirondacks.

Mom Dominique has lots of survival tips to share:

Cranberry Lake has a great beach - shallow enough for Sophia to walk out quite far, a lot of kid centered activities such as mask making, painting on the beach and nature walks, and great facilities, which made bath times much easier.

Your favorite baby or child-friendly activity there:
One of the days it rained so rather than hiding out in the tent all day, we drove over to Tupper Lake and visited an Adirondack museum complete with river otters and many animal displays.

An item you MUST take with you when traveling:
We stayed in a rather large 6 person tent that is large enough to accomodate Sophia's Pack and Play.....she was able to stay on schedule with naps and bedtime and be comfortable doing so. We even went out on a Pontoon boat for the day and just brought the pack and play with us- the boat was large and flat enough to have her take her afternoon nap. We also have a cow backpack that has a "leash" for a tail....it was really helpful for letting her feel independent but still having a hold on her if needed. She is at that age where she does not want to be held too much.

Your best tip or words of wisdom for traveling with kids:
Make sure that your child can be very involved....when my husband went fishing, we had a small toy fishing pole so that Sophia could emulate what he wsa doing. Also, a variety in the level of activity is beneficial. It was great to relax for the afternoon on the beach after a busy morning of hiking and campground activities.

Your favorite way to make it feel like home:
Setting up the tent was a lot of fun.....making sure that Sophia had her space was important to all of us, and keeping up with routine like her bedtime stories and songs helped as well. When we returned home, Sophia asked "where's our tent?!"

Thanks, Dominique, for sharing your experience and tips!

Don't forget to send us your favorite family escape!

Sophia is so cute, she looks like quite a trooper with her tools! I'll be in Inlet on the 8th doing a book signing. I'm looking forward to it, I was in Lake Placid a little bit ago and really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing!
